Morbius the Living Vampire is one of those rare comic characters who is both a great horror character and a superhero antagonist. Like so many villains, his origin story began with a botched science experiment that gave him his powers - the result of good intentions and a great mind coming to a bad end. Despite his origins as a Spider-Man foe, he is even more suited to his role as a horror character, as trailers for his upcoming movie show.

Marvel has plenty of other great horror characters as well. Some much stronger than Morbius while others would make a good snack for him. Here are 5 characters Morbius should fear and 5 he would make his prey.

10 Fear: Dracula

In the Marvel Universe, Dracula is pretty much the biggest, baddest vampire around. The character is far more powerful than his counterpart in Bram Stoker's novel, raising the stakes for anyone who tries to go up against him.

Being given his vampiric abilities through science rather than a magical curse, Morbius is seen as an outsider by the majority of bloodsuckers (in fact, he was even kidnapped by them once so his blood could be weaponized against humans). Morbius can fight off ordinary vamps, but the Lord of Transylvania would put the Living Vampire in a coffin from which there would be no escaping.

9 Prey: Werewolf by Night

Gothic fiction has a long history of pitting werewolves and vampires against each other. Werewolf by Night is the main werewolf of the Marvel Universe who appears whenever a story needs a group of differing monsters.  Also known by the human name Jack Russell, this lycanthrope shapeshifts into his monstrous man-wolf by the full moon's light.

In his wolf form, Jack is stronger, faster, and equipped with the feral savage fangs and claws of a natural killer. However, he's a creature of instinct. As a scientist, Morbius could outthink and outmaneuver Jack.

8 Fear: Shiklah

Shiklah is the Queen of Monsters. She was first introduced in a Deadpool comic, so some fans might associate her with the sort of zany humor one usually gets from the Merc with a Mouth, but that would be a mistake.

Beyond having physical abilities that would make any mere mortal quake with fear, Shiklah is also a shapeshifter with mind control abilities, magical flames, and legions of monsters committed to doing her dark bidding. Shiklah is a force to be reckoned with, whereas Morbius - while tough by human standards - is basically a science experiment gone wrong.

7 Prey: Franken-Castle

Speaking of science experiments gone wrong, one of the more cringy variants of The Punisher is the notorious Franken-Castle, a version of the character that took a bad pun on the name Frank Castle and turned it into a reanimated corpse.

Morbius was the one responsible for turning Frank Castle into a Frankenstein-style monster, hoping Frank would assist the Legion of Monsters. Morbius and the Legion recognized that the Punisher was a strong military asset. That said, what Morbius made he can also unmake. The mad science that created Franken-Castle can turn him into just another pile of unstitched corpse flesh.

6 Fear: Ghost Rider

Ghost Rider is one of the most powerful horror characters in Marvel. Numerous incarnations of the character have existed over the years, individuals who have been possessed by a Spirit of Vengeance after making a deal with a devil. They are given such powers as weaponized hellfire, the ability to summon chains to flog their enemies, and the Penance Stare, which makes someone relive the pain they've inflicted on others.

Ghost Rider is driven by black magic, while Morbius is scientific in his origins. The two would only need to look at each other in the eye and a simple Penance Stare would reveal that Ghost Rider is the stronger of them.

5 Prey: Blade

Blade is the deadliest vampire hunter of the Marvel Universe, a dhampir from the seedier backstreets of London who has spent his life tracking down and slaying the legions of the unliving. A master martial artist, he often makes use of an iconic silver-edged sword but has killed vampires with everything from wooden knives to nunchucks.

In theory, Blade should be able to kill Morbius. However, somehow Blade hasn't managed this basic task after years spent in the same dark circles, which suggests Morbius's scientific abilities give him an advantage over Blade, who is used to encountering vampires of the more magical variety.

4 Fear: Mephisto

Mephisto is the devil. If one wants to get technical, Marvel has a lot of devils, but really, Mephisto is the main one who seems to stick around. From Peter Parker to Ghost Rider, whenever someone wants to make a deal with the devil, they almost always engage in such bargaining with this Lord of Hell.

Between his incredible mind and all of his vampire powers, Morbius is one tough bloodsucker, but there is just no way in hell that he can stand up to a devil-like Mephisto. The best he could hope for is to make a bargain in exchange for mercy.

3 Prey: Venom

The symbiote known as Venom is an alien who attaches itself to another living being, giving them various powers ranging from enhanced strength to an ability to manipulate the symbiotes' shape. While incredibly powerful, he also has some major vulnerabilities, notably extreme heat and loud noises.

Venom's weaknesses make him an easy target for someone like Morbius to take down. Fire and loud noises are pretty much the easiest things in the world for a scientist to conjure up to take Venom down. Meanwhile, with Morbius's knowledge of biological systems and Marvel super-medicine, he could almost certainly experiment on Venom's host and remove the symbiote.

2 Fear: Dormammu

Dormammu is a god-like being of chaos who lives beyond the limits of the main reality, inheriting the Dark Dimension, a realm of magic where the Mindless Ones dwell. This immortal being is one of the most powerful magic users in the Marvel multiverse and is Doctor Strange's greatest adversary.

Like with Mephisto, the power discrepancy is so vast between Dormammu and Morbius, there is just no hope of the vamp winning this one. He should truly fear Dormammu, as even entering into the Dark Dimension might drive him raving mad.

1 Prey: Vermin

Vermin is a Spider-Man villain probably best known for his appearance in the classic story "Kraven's Last Hunt" and its various spinoffs. This rat-like man-eating monster lost his former humanity and has been reduced to a lonely, violent creature who dwells in the sewer, muttering about his misery. He personifies the horrors of being driven from society.

Morbius has also lived as an outcast, feeding on people with his superior strength. Vermin is probably physically stronger than Morbius, but ultimately, Morbius would sink his teeth into Vermin's hairy neck and empty his veins, leaving a defeated corpse behind.
