Daredevil Hits The 650th Issue Mark

The events of the "Devil's Reign" storyline ushered in significant changes for Marvel's Man, and now Woman, Without Fear. Not only did Elektra take up the mantle and the role of Daredevil, but Matt Murdock's return launched a new volume and era for the character.

Murdock's return also marked the return of the Eisner-nominated creative team of writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Marco Checchetto. The duo's return coincided with the landmark 650th issue, with Daredevil #2 featuring alums like Alex Maleev, Paul Azaceta, Phil Noto, Chris Samnee, and Klaus Janson. Longtime creators Ann Nocenti and John Romita Jr. also returned, revisiting their hard-hitting and beloved late '80s and creation Typhoid Mary.

The 2099 Universe Turns 30 This Year

Marvel's dystopian future of 2099 marked 30 years since its introduction. Featuring future versions of Spider-Man, The Avengers, and The X-Men, the 2099 universe was a society run by twisted corporations which the heroes sought to overthrow.

In celebration of its 30th anniversary, beloved writer Steve Orlando and an all-star lineup of artists such as Paul Fry, David Wachter, Marco Castiello, Ze Carlos, Alessandro Mircola, and Kim Jacinto revisited the 2099 Universe in the limited-series Spider-Man 2099: Exodus. The series featured classic characters like Spider-Man 2099, and new 2099 characters such as Winter Soldier, a new version of Loki, and new members of the 2099 X-Men.

Carnage Has Been Spider Man's Foe For 30 Years

Spider-Man's adversary and the archenemy of Venom, Carnage turned 30 years old in 2022. Throughout his time in the Marvel Universe, Carnage has possessed multiple hosts, the most infamous being its first host, killer Cletus Kasady. Along with Kasady, the symbiote has used other characters such as Ben Reilly and Norman Osborn.

Marvel marked this milestone with a series of variant covers featuring Marvel heroes as hosts of the Carnage symbiote. A new series written by Ram V, spinning out of the King In Black & Carnage Forever events, follows the psychopathic symbiote adrift and deadlier than ever without a host.

7 A New Team Forms As The Midnight Sons Turn 30

The Midnight Sons Get A Modern Look for the 30th Anniversary

In 1992, the Midnight Sons, a group of supernaturally based characters including Hellstrom, Morbius, Werewolf by Night, Doctor Strange, and Ghost Riders Danny Ketch and Johnny Blaze, debuted in Ghost Rider #31. After appearances in various individual titles, the team spun out into Midnight Sons Unlimited, a nine-issue anthology series ran from April 1993 to May 1995.

Midnight Sons was the "first distinct family group" to receive a distinct family imprint and cover treatment. This year, in celebration of 30 years, Marvel has introduced a new iteration of the team reflecting today's Marvel Universe while embracing the legacy of the original fan-favorite series, with a new lineup featuring Blade, Kushala, the Ghost Rider (Spirit Rider), Magik, Wolverine, Nico Minoru, and Zoe Laveau.

As the "Destiny of X" continues to unfold in the X-Men corner of the Marvel Universe, the New Mutants are set to celebrate 40 years in New Mutants #30. The team of young mutants, created by X-Men visionary scribe Chris Claremont and legendary artist Bob McLeod, featured the next generation of mutantkind with hard-hitting coming-of-age adventures and represented a shift for the franchise.

Over the years, New Mutants has served as a contemporary voice for marginalized youth in a harsh, cruel world which will be celebrated with an anniversary issue featuring a collection of short stories by Vita Ayala and Alyssa Wong. The two will be joined by an all-star roster of artists and will feature variant covers by McCleod and Rob Liefeld.

5 Johnny Blaze Has Been The Spirit Of Vengeance For 50 Years

Johnny Blaze Has Been Ghost Rider For 50 years

Ghost Rider, one of Marvel's most iconic characters, is celebrating 50 years of Johnny Blaze adopting the role of the Spirit of Vengeance. The stunt cyclist incarnation of the character was created by Gary Friedrich, Roy Thomas, and Mike Ploog, and first appeared in Marvel Spotlight #5, later headlining a self-titled series in 1973. Johnny Blaze's time as Ghost Rider ended in issue #81 when the demon that empowered him to enact vengeance upon sinners separated from its host.

In February, a new series starring Blaze launched with writer Benjamin Percy and Cory Smith in the driver's seat. The one-shot Ghost Rider: Vengeance Forever #1 also starred Blaze and examined the troubling weight of legacy and Ghost Rider's lost history.

4 It's No Small Feat That Ant-Man Is Turning 60

The Ant-Man Legacy Turns 60 years old

Ant-Man, one of Marvel's smallest heroes, is celebrating the big 60th anniversary with a four-issue limited series tracing the character's unique history by exploring every hero to take on the mantle. Taking readers on this epic journey will be writer Al Ewing and artist Tom Hardy, beginning in the Silver Age and concluding in a strange new future.

The story follows Ant-Men Hank Pym, Eric O'Grady, and Scott Lang and introduces a brand-new future Ant-Man as they face a threat that connects them all and they only they can hope to defeat by working together.

3 By Odin's Beard... The God Of Thunder Strikes The Big 6-0

Thor God Of Thunder Celebrates 60 years as The Odinson

Marvel's God of Thunder celebrated not one but two significant milestones this year. Not only did Thor mark 60 years in the comic book pages, but also hit the 750th issue. Soon after wrapping the "God of Hammers" story arc, Thor was set on a collision course with his fellow Avenger, Hulk, as the two collided in the Earth-shattering Banner of War by Donny Cates and Martin Coccolo.

Thor celebrated 750 issues with an oversized issue that saw Thor taking up the mantle of the All-Father following Odin's death, but also has past creative teams telling all-new stories set during their landmark runs. Thor: Lightning and Lament #1, Jane Foster & The Mighty Thor, and the cinematic release of Thor: Love & Thunder rounded out the offerings fit for a god.

2 Don't Make Hulk Angry By Missing His 60th Birthday

The-Incredible-Hulk Can Still Smash at 60

The Green Goliath of the Marvel Universe kicked off his 60th anniversary with his anger unleashed and a new look, thanks to writer Donny Cates and artist Ottley's inaugural arc of the new Hulk series. Along with a throw-down with Thor, Hulk received the Grand Design treatment as Jim Rugg distilled 60 years of the character's most significant moments into a two-volume story focusing on the monster and madness.

In the ongoing title, Banner devises a way to control the beast within, allowing for an exploration of the very core of Hulk's rage and destructive legacy as never before. The second part of Hulk's 60th anniversary involves a return to space and Planet Hulk.

1 Spider-Man Has Been Swing Around For 60 Years

The friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man has been Wall Crawling for 60 years

Spider-Man, arguably Marvel's most iconic character, turns 60, and the celebration is lasting all year. A new volume kicked off the year following Spidey's biggest event in Beyond, which includes the 900th issue. Going all out, Marvel has released multiple variant cover sets, along with revisiting the Spider-verse.

Marvel is also marking the issue that started it all, Amazing Fantasy #15, with the one-shot Amazing Fantasy #1000. The giant-sized issue brings together some of the industry’s most acclaimed creators to explore the past and future of Amazing Spider-Man and will mark Neil Gaiman’s return to the Marvel Universe. Armando Ianucci, the Emmy Award-winning creator of Veep and Avenue 5 makes his Marvel Comics debut, along with an all-star roster of writers and artists.
