Marvel's Midnight Suns lead designer Jake Solomon has explained why the decision was made to make Deadpool a DLC character, rather than include the Merc With a Mouth in the base game.

As Solomon explained in an interview with PCGamesN, Deadpool's mouth was exactly the issue. "Originally we toyed with the idea of putting Deadpool in the base game, but it's like the kind of thing where anytime Deadpool shows up, it becomes the Deadpool show," he said. "The way that Marvel put it was 'Deadpool kind of sucks the air out of the room.' So we were like, 'Yeah, I guess that's true.' So we decided to wait on that."

According to Solomon, however, being DLC isn't necessarily a downgrade. "[The DLC characters] actually have more content in a lot of ways than some of the base game heroes in the sense that they all have three narrative missions solely devoted to them and their [own] part in a whole new storyline," he said. "Those missions are available very early in the game."

In addition to Deadpool, Midnight Suns' roster of DLC characters includes Venom, Storm and Morbius. "Those characters have all the same content as the base game heroes, relationship wise, tactical wise, but they have even more narrative missions than most of the other heroes," Solomon concluded.

"Marvel's Midnight Suns wears its inspiration proudly, never shying away from the absurdity and silliness common to comics, while still telling a powerful story about found families, redemption, and the choices people will make to protect their loved ones."
