Now that the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) third phase is complete, Marvel collectors and video archivists everywhere can finally get their hands on a complete boxset instead of buying each of the Phase 3 movies one at a time.

Enter the MCU Phase 3 Collector’s Edition, which has all of the latest Marvel movies like Avengers: Endgame to game-changers like Black Panther in it. But before fans go to Amazon or Walmart to place their order, here’s some things everyone needs to know about the collections.

10 It Comes In Two Parts

MCU Phase 3 Part 1 And 2

To date, Phase 3 was the MCU’s biggest and most ambitious effort. This period in the giant franchise had the most number of movies in it, including a massive two-part Avengers crossover that will go down in history as one of the biggest blockbusters ever seen on the big screen.

Because of its sheer size and scope, it’s not surprising that Phase 3 had to be split into two boxsets. Part One’s box is designed around Doctor Strange’s Eye of Agamotto (aka the Time Stone), while Part Two takes visual cues from the Infinity Gauntlet at the center of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.

9 It’s Part Of A Bigger Set

MCU Collectors Edition Boxsets

For the completionists or those who have yet to buy a single MCU DVD and are looking to fix that, the two-part Phase 3 set is part of a bigger collection. Phases 1 and 2 are also available, though Amazon ran out of stock at one point. Fortunately, they’ve been reprinted following the hype and demand for Phase 3.

All in all, this would amount to four boxsets but for those who want a single set, fear not. The MCU’s Infinity Saga (starting with Iron Man and ending with Spider-Man: Far From Home) has been compressed into one massive collection. The set comes with 23 movies, 50 discs, and exclusive art prints. On release, the Infinity Saga Collector’s Edition was priced at $550.

8 It’s Just A Pair Of Boxsets

MCU Phase 1 And 2

Phase 3’s two parts are sold as a pair of boxsets encased in a slip cover. There’s nothing wrong with this and the DVD booklets are designed to fit perfectly into any video shelf but when compared to its predecessors, the Phase 3 set feels like a bit of a letdown – despite the MCU arguably being at its best during this period.

The previous phases also came in boxed booklets, but had something extra. To wit, limited runs of the Phase 1 set had a replica of Nick Fury’s suitcase that transported the Tesseract. Meanwhile, Phase 2’s exclusive edition went as far as to include a replica of the Orb that housed the Power Stone.

7 It’s Available In Both Blu-Ray & DVD

MCU Blu Ray Vs DVD

DVD collectors tend to be divided when it comes to picking a format. Some prefer the old-school DVDs out of principle, while others want to upgrade their entire video library into uniformly high-definition Blu-Ray rereleases. All parties can rejoice since MCU Phase 3 comes in both formats.

The Blu-Ray releases come in 4K restorations, while the DVD versions follow normal TV standards. Regardless of format, both versions are presented in a 1.78:1 aspect ratio and remastered Dolby audio.

6 Blu-Ray & DVD Region Locks Are Different

MCU Collectors Edition Region Lock

As expected, the two different video formats come with differing region locks. The regular DVDs work exclusively with Region 2 players, meaning most of Europe, Japan, the Middle East, and South Africa. The Blu-Ray collection has no region lock and has been advertised to work on most Blu-Ray DVD players and PlayStations around the world.

That said, a few reviews on Amazon brought up problems with the region locks. Some versions of the set didn’t work on Region 1 players, despite the region-free promise. To be safe, it’s highly recommended that you double check your DVD player and make sure that it’s capable of playing discs from all regions.

5 It Costs Less Than $110

MCU Black Panther Money

Individually, an MCU DVD would run anywhere from $10 to $20. A complete set of all the movies in would run up to almost $1000, independent of shipping and handling fees. The Collectors’ Edition, on the other hand, comes with all of Phase 3’s movies plus bonus content and will cost no more than $150.

As of this writing, the Blu-Ray editions costs $109.82 (Part 1 costs $50.74, while Part 2 costs $59.08) and the standard DVD version costs $99.02 (Part 1 costs $41.03, while Part 2 costs $57.99) on Amazon. Not only do these Collector’s Editions save money, but they also save space since they’re just two box sets instead of almost 10 DVDs.

4 It Has A Total Of 11 Movies

MCU Phaser 3 Movies

As mentioned earlier, Phase 3 is the biggest MCU escapade to date. Starting in 2016 and ending in 2019, the MCU’s most ambitious phase yet saw the Avengers’ schism, the beginnings of the multiverse, Thanos’ wrath, and historical moments such as record-breaking blockbusters & culturally significant movies for Black Panther and Captain Marvel.

The complete list of movies (arranged chronologically) is as follows: Part 1 has Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Thor: Ragnarok. Part 2 contains Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man & The Wasp, Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home.

3 The Blu-Ray Set Has 3 Discs’ Worth Of Special Features

Aside from the movies, the Collector’s Edition also comes with tons of bonus content. Part 1 has one disc filled with 14 character featurettes for each Avenger, while Part 2 needed two discs to contain its documentaries and retrospectives. Some of these are a directors’ roundtable and a documentary titled “Remembering Stan Lee,” dedicated to Stan The Man himself.

That said, these special features are exclusive to the Blu-Ray version, which has a total of 14 discs as per Amazon’s listings. The standard DVD set only has 11 discs (one for each movie), though every disc comes with the usual commentaries, trailers and behind-the-scenes shorts. Fortunately, both formats include the exclusive art prints and mini posters.

2 The Reviews Are Universally Positive

MCU Phase 3 Amazon Listing

As far as customers are concerned, the complete Phase 3 collection was worth every penny. On Amazon, both boxsets enjoy strong ratings and recommendations, with many saying that they were satisfied with their purchases.

Common sentiments and praises include: the boxsets’ space-saving design, the bargain price for 11 movies and tons of extras, and the movies’ good quality and audio on their TVs. That said, a common gripe pointed out the slip covers’ flimsy material that was prone to damage or some discs not being region-free as promised.

1 The Disc Prints Can Be Inconsistent

MCU Phase 3 Problematic Discs

A recurring problem for those who bought the Collector's’ Editions was that the discs’ prints can be inconsistent. On the teaser images, Part 1’s discs are coded green while Part 2’s are purple, reflecting the Time Stone and Thanos, respectively. Each disc also has a character from its movie on it, adding some flair to it.

However, some customers reported that the discs they got came in a plain blue print, with Spider-Man: Homecoming being the sole exception. This is a common problem for the Part 1 boxset, leading to some annoyed comments and rare but hard-to-miss low ratings. It’s because of this that Part 1 has lower user scores than its follow-up collection.
