It seemed controversial at the time, but Mark Ruffalo's casting as Bruce Banner and the Hulk has turned into something that has worked out for the best. Few fans could see anyone else in the role of Bruce Banner. His dynamic with the other Avengers' actors is wonderful, especially on screen.

Marvel fans have noticed many ways that Ruffalo's Hulk honors the character's roots. There are some areas where Ruffalo's role diverged from the comics, most of the time for the benefit of the story. Here are times when it was accurate and some times that it wasn't.

10 Not Accurate: Working Relationship With Tony Stark

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Bruce Banner and Tony Stark developed a close working relationship. In Avengers Tower, Stark gave Banner a lab of his own. The two also worked together to create Ultron. When Banner returned to Earth, the first person he had Dr. Strange summon was Tony Stark.

In the comics, the two scientists didn't meet until Iron Man #131. It was later retconned that the pair had spent time together in college and on the cusp of the Gamma Bomb test. The two never became as close as they are in the MCU.

9 Accurate: Hulk the Result of Trying to Duplicate The Super Soldier Serum

Ultimate Hulk

This reference comes from The Ultimates' alternate version of the Avengers. In the MCU, it's mentioned in passing that when he became the Hulk, Bruce Banner was trying to duplicate the Super Soldier serum. In the Ultimates, the Hulk's origin is almost identical.

Tony Stark does emphasize the role that Gamma radiation played in creating the Hulk. That much radiation should have killed Bruce Banner. Becoming the Hulk saved Bruce Banner's life. What doesn't get explored further is that this means Banner owes a debt to Steve Rogers. In the MCU, things are linked in more ways than it sometimes appears.

8 Not Accurate: Defeated By the Hulkbuster Armor

In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Tony Stark uses a gigantic addition to his armor to fight the Hulk in Johannesburg. In the film, he eventually succeeds in subduing Banner. In the comics, however, the Hulk came out much better during his first encounter with the Hulkbuster armor.

In Iron Man #305, Tony used the Hulkbuster attachments to stop Hulk, in his "Professor Hulk" form, from damaging Stark International property for work done during the time of Obidiah Stane's control of the company. This battle is a stalemate and not an easy victory for Iron Man.

7 Accurate: Suicide Attempt

In the first Avengers film, Banner relates a story about how low he sank in his quest to rid himself of the Hulk. He tells the group, "I got low. I didn't see an end, so I put a bullet in my mouth, and the other guy spit it out." This is a great bit of dialogue that paints a picture.

That derives from Peter David's last regular issue of Incredible Hulk. After his wife, Betty dies of gamma poisoning, Bruce becomes so despondent that he tries to kill himself. He's stopped by Dr. Leonard Sampson in the first attempt, but it wouldn't be his last. While there's not a scene with a gun, several attempts are documented, all stopped by the Hulk.

6 Not Accurate: Hulk Refusing To Come Out

In Avengers: Infinity War, the Hulk is beaten by Thanos and refuses to come out for the rest of the film. This follows three years that the Hulk kept Bruce from taking back control. It's obvious that there's some bad blood between the two sides of Banner's psyche, and the Hulk refuses to help at all.

In the comics, it's hard to find an instance where this dynamic existed in this way. Hulk always seemed to hate "puny Banner" and never refused to take control. In contrast, he often tried to keep from reverting to Banner's form.

5 Accurate: Professor Hulk

Hulk In Endgame With Banner's Mind

The Professor Hulk incarnation might be one of the most popular to exist in the comics. Created when Doc Samson integrated the various personalities that Banner had manifested, this had Banner dealing with some serious trauma in his past.

The details of the transformation to the integration of Hulk and Banner in the film aren't explored. Given the footage that has leaked showing the merging as planned in Infinity War, it's probably for the best that this transformation happened in the five years between the last two Avengers films rather than suddenly before the big snap.

4 Not Accurate: Mostly Inarticulate Hulk

Mark Ruffalo's Hulk has one real line in the first two Avengers films. If he hadn't uttered the unforgettable, "Puny god," fans might have been floored by the articulate Hulk in Thor: Ragnarok. For two films, all Hulk got was a lot of growling and yelling.

In the comics, the Hulk was very articulate at first, becoming less intelligent as time went on. The only times when he wasn't able to more than shout unintelligible roars was when he had none of Banner's intelligence manifesting, being a completely savage Hulk.

3 Accurate: Planet Hulk

In Thor: Ragnarok, the first half of the film draws heavily from the classic Planet Hulk story. On an alien world, he's put into Gladiator tournaments, eventually becoming the grand champion. In the comics, the Hulk would have stayed there had his wife not been killed by the Illuminati's self-destructive anti-matter drive on his crashed shuttle.

The Hulk that fans see in Thor: Ragnarok is happy in this environment. His rage and anger are given a focus. People like him for the same reasons everyone on Earth fears him. This also lets Hulk address his relationship with the Avengers, who often used him as a weapon of mass destruction.

2 Not Accurate: Relationship with Black Widow

Bruce Banner and Black Widow's romantic relationship in Avengers: Age of Ultron was a huge departure from the comics. Some fans took issue with it, but it had a complete arc that affected both Avengers. Natasha had to address what happened to her in the Red Room and Banner had to address the dangers of letting anyone too close to him.

In the comics, Banner and the Hulk have had other love interests, but never one of his teammates, notwithstanding Old Man Logan. His primary love interest has almost always been Betty Ross. Other than bringing in a new character, the choice of Natasha is a good alternative.

1 Accurate: Founding Avenger

founding-avengers-mcu

In the comics, the Hulk was the threat Loki used to unwittingly bring together the original Avengers. He had planned to pit the Hulk against his brother Thor, but when Iron Man, Ant-Man, and the Wasp also answered a call for help, a legend was born.

In the first Avengers film, Bruce Banner is the one recruited to aid the Avengers that Nick Fury assembles. Loki uses the Hulk to try and take down the Helicarrier, but inadvertently, gives the Avengers a new member that just considers him a "puny god."
