It’s only a matter of time before the Fantastic Four make their debut as part of the MCU. After three films at Fox that got more disappointing with each entry, Marvel’s First Family will surely be treated more respectably in the capable hands of Marvel Studios. The characters and their mythology will be allowed to flourish in ways that they didn’t before, and one character in particular that deserves this attention going forward is Sue Storm, the Invisible Woman.

While she wasn’t the most mistreated character (that dishonor goes to Doctor Doom), Sue got underutilized in those films as a whole. While Jessica Alba and Kate Mara did what they could, the scripts never really let Sue develop into her comic persona: An intelligent scientist, a loving mother, wife, and sister, and a powerful, capable member of her team. Whoever is cast in the role for the MCU will need to embody most if not all those traits, and this list will look at 10 noteworthy actresses who can do justice to Sue’s character.

10 Brit Marling

A scene from the final season of The OA

An exceptionally gifted writer and performer, Marling would be an inspired choice to inhabit the role of Susan Storm. Not only has she given intelligent and gentle performances, but she's talked in the past about her frustrations with the kinds of cliched parts Hollywood gives to women, which has led to her writing her own roles.

Marling could have a say in how Sue should be portrayed within the MCU, helping set this version apart from the less successful film versions. It doesn't hurt that most of the projects she's written and starred in (which includes the short-lived Netflix series The OA) have elements of science fiction in them, and Marling's knowledge of the genre could lend itself to a Fantastic Four film, whether she's a writer for it or not.

9 Dianna Agron

Dianna Agron is a shrewd and capable actress who could bring a lot to the role of Susan Storm. On Glee, Agron deftly portrayed Quinn Fabray, who started out as an unlikeable head cheerleader before becoming a more humble and compassionate girl.

This ability to capture multiple emotions is also present in 2017's Hollow in the Land. As a young woman in search of her missing brother, Agron was simultaneously vulnerable and determined. She knew she was in over her head at times but was driven by a deep love for her brother that resulted in great displays of strength and intelligence in order to find him and clear his name of murder. There's no doubt that Agron could bring the same kind of emotions to a new take on Sue's character.

8 Sophie Cookson

Kingsman-2-Roxy

Cookson has been working steadily these past few years, and the young English actress is definitely on the cusp of breaking out. Fans of the Kingsman franchise will no doubt recognize her as Roxy Morton/Lancelot, a fellow trainee and friend to Taron Egerton's Eggsy.

It's in those films that Cookson portrayed a character who wasn't very far removed from Sue conceptually. Roxy was not only smart, motivated, and resourceful, but grew more confident over the course of the first film. Cookson could certainly bring that kind of charisma and depth to a similar trajectory for Sue's character arc in several films.

7 Lily James

James has given electric performances in everything, including Cinderella and Baby Driver. She's mostly avoided the call of superhero films, but given her previous experience of working with Disney and Little Woods director Nia DaCosta (who is now set to direct Captain Marvel 2), it may not be long until James joins the MCU. And the role of Sue Storm would be most fitting for her talents.

James often excels at playing sweet and good-natured characters like Sue, though she's no stranger to more complex roles, which would help flesh Sue out more over the course of her appearances. Add in her experience with action-heavy set pieces (as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies has shown) and she's set!

6 Sarah Gadon

Sarah Gadon is a powerhouse who deserves more lead roles like Sue Storm. A lot of her best performances show that she can play charismatic and kind women. Furthermore, her speaking voice has an air of thoughtfulness and delicateness that would lend itself well to Susan's personality and her relationships with Reed, Ben, and Johnny respectively.

It wouldn't be the first time Gadon has been in a Marvel film if she's cast, as she had a minor role in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. However, a more prominent role like the Invisible Woman would be much more appealing to see Gadon work her talents on.

5 Mackenzie Davis

Mackenzie Davis Halt Catch Fire

Davis really burst onto the Hollywood scene after starring on Halt and Catch Fire, and she's shown no signs of slowing down since. She has incredible range as a performer and having that kind of actress play the Invisible Woman would be beneficial to a Fantastic Four project's success.

Davis is best at playing women who are whip-smart and willing to tell those around her what they need to hear at a given moment, all traits that could fit an MCU version of Sue like a glove. Imagine Davis's Sue calling out Reed for being too focused on his scientific endeavors over their family life or scolding Johnny for goofing off? On top of that, she has comedic chops and Terminator: Dark Fate proved Davis can handle action. Here's hoping Marvel is keeping watch on her.

4 Rose McIver

Any fan of iZombie knows that Rose McIver's acting chops are legitimate. The New Zealand-born actress is captivating to watch, bringing in a sharp wit, great comedic timing, and an air of likability whenever she's onscreen.

It would be great to see her bring those exact traits to a new version of the Invisible Woman that becomes one of the MCU's most engaging and inspiring characters going forward. As a former Power Ranger (as fans of Power Rangers RPM will recall), she could certainly handle most of the crazy action scenes that come her way.

3 Teresa Palmer

Palmer deserves a larger role worthy of her talents. Marvel Studios has been praised for casting unknown or up-and-coming actors in lead roles and making them into household names, and Palmer is just the kind of actor that the studio would look to for one of their films.

Palmer has played sympathetic characters that are often placed in larger-than-life situations (see her role in Lights Out). She could play on a variation of this kind of character if given the chance to play Susan.

2 Rachel Brosnahan

The Golden Globe-winning star of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel would be a welcome addition to the MCU, and it's surprising that she hasn't been approached to join the ever-expanding franchise (outside of this sketch, anyway). If she were approached for a Fantastic Four project, then Brosnahan would surely knock the role of Susan out of the park.

One need only watch the Amazon Prime series for a taste of what Brosnahan could bring to the most powerful member of the Fantastic Four. The sharp wit, comedic timing, motherly instinct, arresting charisma, and emotional complexity of Midge Maisel would fit Susan just as well.

1 Johanna Braddy

Braddy first came to prominence as bad-ass gamer Jenny Matrix on the popular web-series Video Game High School,  before earning lead roles on the Lifetime drama UnReal and the ABC thriller Quantico. Both VGHS and Quantico show that she has the action experience for Susan, and all three series show how great she is at playing intelligent, likable, and outspoken women thrust into situations where she must question every decision she makes.

Braddy could uniquely capture Sue's personality in a way that hasn't been done before onscreen. It also doesn't hurt that she bears a striking resemblance to the character as she has appeared in the comics.
