The preview for Legion of X #9 seems to have a recurring theme of parental reunions. The comic opens with Paras Gavaskar/Indra visiting his parents when things quickly go sideways, to put it mildly. Soon after, David Haller/Legion himself gets an unexpected visit from his own father, Charles Xavier/Professor X. Finally -- in his native Bavaria, Germany -- Nightcrawler is greeted by none other than his adoptive mother, Margali Szardos.

Who Are Nightcrawler's Parents?

While Nightcrawler's birth parents are fellow mutants Azazel and Raven Darkhölme/Mystique, he was raised by the sorceress Margali Szardos. Mystique had taken the form of a German noblewoman and married Baron Christian Wagner of Bavaria. During this marriage, however, she had an affair with Azazel, leading to her becoming pregnant with Kurt. The baby, of course, was born visibly mutated, with the stress of the experience causing Mystique to lose concentration and reveal her true form.

Mystique and her newborn were then chased out of town by an angry mob. At some point during her escape, Mystique fell unconscious, leaving the blue baby to float down a river and go over a waterfall. Kurt miraculously survived and was found by Margali Szardos, who decided to raise the mutant alongside her other two children. The boy who would one day be known as Nightcrawler of the X-Men grew up at the circus where Margali worked as a fortune-teller.

Written by Si Spurrier, penciled by Netho Diaz, inked by Sean Parsons, colored by Federico Blee and lettered by VC's Clayton Cowles, Legion of X #9 goes on sale Jan. 11 from Marvel Comics.
