Marvel's foremost street-level superhero team will be clashing with some major criminal forces when The Defenders #6 hits store shelves later this fall. Of course, the Defenders taking on crime in New York City is nothing new, but there's a twist: this time around, those criminals aren't necessarily looking to take down the Defenders, they're looking to claim the Kingpin's vacant throne. The issue, which is tied to the new Marvel Legacy event, looks to establish which villain becomes Wilson Fisk's successor.

Marvel today released a slew of details about the upcoming Marvel Legacy initiative, which looks to explore various characters' legacies and the roles of their young successors, including news about the upcoming Invincible Iron Man arc, among others. The Defenders news comes with an extra twist, though, as the newly revealed cover art includes a superhero -- and erstwhile villain – not often associated with the team. Apparently, Deadpool will have something to do with the street team's fight against the Kingpin contenders.

"His involvement is a big clue to who ends up being the new Kingpin," The Defenders writer Brian Michael Bendis said in an interview with IGN. "Don't worry, it’s not him :-) Oh wait, maybe it should be. That's not a totally terrible idea. Deadpool is the new kingpin? Hmmmm… :)"

While the idea of Deadpool acting as the new Kingpin is scary enough, Bendis did not offer a hint about how the Merc with a Mouth's involvement in the Defenders arc could indicate the identity of the next New York City crime boss. Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Daredevil look to have their work cut out for them when the Marvel Legacy storyline hits. They've got to contend with not only a brewing turf war, but now an additional, insane mutant mercenary.
