Announced in June as part of writer Jason Aaron and artist Esad Ribic’s plans for Marvel Legacy #1, the Avengers of 1,000,000 B.C. will be comprised of Odin, Iron Fist, Star Brand, Phoenix, Agamotto, Black Panther and Ghost Rider (atop a flaming mammoth, no less) to confront “something very big […] buried deep in the earth.” Now, in the wake of Marvel revealing Mike Deodato-illustrated renditions of Ribic's Avengers designs, the one-shot's writer has shared the first of the issue's 50-page story.

The page, tweeted out by Aaron late last week, doesn't appear to showcase any of the characters who will come together to form the prehistoric Avengers. It does, however, feature Mjolnir, Thor's magic hammer, which we know will be wielded by Odin in the one-shot thanks to last week's Marvel Legacy promo art.

Make no mistake about it - that is Mjolnir, and not some other Asgardian weapon. The difficulty the cavemen are having in lifting the hammer on Legacy's first page, then, has less to do with it being heavy, and more to do with whether they're worthy of wielding it in the first place.

Marvel Comics' Legacy initiative kicks off in September with Marvel Legacy #1, a 50-page one-shot from writer Jason Aaron and artist Esad Ribic. The one-shot promises to tell the “startling origin of the Marvel Universe” and underscore how “it’s all connected.” It arrives in stores Wednesday, September 27, 2017.
