'Patient' Marvel Gave Larson Space to Balance Superhero Spectacle, Art Films

Brie Larson reveals Marvel Studios was quite patient in allowing her the time to make a decision on whether or not she wanted to enter the MCU.

Oscar-winning actor Brie Larson has heaped praise on Marvel Studios for allowing her the time to make a proper decision on entering the superhero arena via Captain Marvel.

Larson, who won the Best Actress Academy Award for the 2015 drama Room has been known in recent years for being selective about her movies, opting for more artistic endeavors than Hollywood blockbusters. However, in time she removed all doubts, eventually warming up to the "big decision" she had to make with regard to comic book movie spectacles.

"There's a lot about it that felt like a big decision and it's not just a big decision for myself, it's a big decision for my family and my partner and for my friends," she said while speaking to the Associated Press while attending the Women In Film Crystal + Lucy Awards. "It's a big change for everybody and I wasn't sure if it was the right thing for me."

"I never want to do, make artistic decisions that will feel like a burden or that would take me away from the parts of my life that I find fulfilling so Marvel was super patient and allowed me a lot of time to think it over and then once I felt like I had made the right decision which was doing it I got both feet in and I'm really happy."

Rumors have it her Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel is being eyed as the new face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the set up coming next year in her '90s-based solo effort against the Skrulls. The character already appeared (somewhat) in the Avengers: Infinity War post-credits, heralding her arrival in Avengers 4 next year to equalize the playing field against Thanos.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck from a script they wrote with Liz Flahive, Carly Mensch, Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Jude Law as Mar-Vell, Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer, Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, and Ben Mendelsohn, Lashana Lynch, Algenis Perez Soto, McKenna Grace and Annette Bening in as-yet-undisclosed roles. The film arrives March 8, 2019.
