Whatever knows fear burns at Man-Thing's touch! Don't hold it against him though, he's a pretty good (swamp) person once you get to know him. Man-Thing was born when scientist Ted Sallis found his research lab in the Everglades raided by AIM. Escaping into the swamp, the dying Sallis injected himself with the experimental formula he had been developing. His body merged with the plant life around him, transforming him into Man-Thing.

Although Man-Thing has become a cult favorite among many Marvel fans, he's never been an A-list character. He may have headlined his own (not very good) TV movie on the SyFy channel, but how much do we really know about him? Well, let's go on an adventure into fear with these facts about the giant-sized Man-Thing!

10 Captain America 2.0

Dozens of scientists in the Marvel Universe have tried to recreate the Super-Soldier Serum that transformed skinny Steve Rogers into Captain America. All of these attempts have been at least partial failures, but none have backfired as badly as the one made by Ted Sallis.

The reason that AIM targeted Sallis' research lab was that he and his fellow scientists had been attempting to duplicate Dr. Abraham Erksine's lost formula. When the dying Sallis injected himself with the experimental serum, it (along with the mystical nature of the swamp) helped facilitate his monstrous transformation.

9 A Date With Man-Thing

Man-Thing is a bit of a... romantic. While much of Ted Sallis' humanity was lost when he was reborn as a swamp-creature, enough remained that he has been able to display a fondness for several women over the years.

He shared a childlike bond with Jennifer Kale, a young sorceress who discovered him during the first years following his transformation. Later, when he was a member of Luke Cage's Thunderbolts, he was particularly protective of his teammate Moonstone, who found his "curiosity" to be amusing.

8 He Hears Through His Forehead

Sallis' transformation reformed his entire physiology on a fundamental level. His interior organs, central nervous system, and brain have changed and shifted places in his body to better accommodate his new form.

As a result, his auditory organs are located in his forehead, meaning that instead of ears he uses his forehead to listen. That's not the only way his body has adapted: he functions as his own self-contained eco-system, allowing him to leave the swamp for extended periods.

7 Meet The Son of Man-Thing

In Avengers vol. 8 #15, readers were introduced to Boy-Thing, the son of Man-Thing. Well, sort of. The mysterious villain the Shadow Colonel kept a miniature version of Man-Thing as a kind of pet/weapon, stating that he obtained the creature from a clipping he took of the original while in the Everglades.

When the Avengers defeat the Shadow Colonel, Blade adopts the creature and names it "Boy-Thing" (a name it hates,) which he uses to create a limitless supply of wooden stakes. In a true and just world, Boy-Thing would have been Marvel's breakout character of 2019.

6 Man-Thing of Science, Man-Thing of Magic

Similar to Doctor Doom, Man-Thing occupies a unique place in the Marvel Universe as he is a being with one foot planted in the world of science and another rooted in the world of magic. The experimental prototype of the recreated Super-Soldier Serum helped jump-start Sallis' change into Man-Thing but it wasn't the only element at work.

The section of the Everglades that Sallis escaped into housed the Nexus of Realities, a gateway between Earth and various other dimensions. The Nexus provides the surrounding swamp with mystical properties, a crucial contribution to Man-Thing's creation. Man-Thing is the guardian of the Nexus, protecting it from those who would use it for less than altruistic purposes.

5 He's Pals With Groot

When the Guardians of the Galaxy begin their hunt to find the different Infinity Gems scattered around the universe, they make a quick stop in the Florida Everglades where Groot claims he has a friend who can help them locate one of the gems.

Upon their arrival, Groot races off to find his friend. When the rest of the team catches up to him they find that his friend is Man-Thing. He manages to communicate to Groot that he can help the Guardians by sending them in the right direction through the Nexus of Reality.

4 Sensitive Soul

Man-Thing's most famous attribute (other than... you know, the whole swamp-creature thing) is that his touch burns those who feel fear. While it's an admittedly cool power, its a byproduct of his unique biology. Man-Thing is an empath, a creature heavily influenced by the strong emotions of others.

Positive emotions like joy or love cause him to become curious and try and observe the person experiencing these feelings. Negative emotions like anger or hate lead him to become aggressive or violent or in extreme cases, to secrete a burning chemical that will set his enemies on fire.

3 Enter: Howard the Duck!

The character Howard the Duck made his first appearance in a Man-Thing story from Adventure Into Fear #19. A resident of the extradimensional Duckworld, a planet populated by sentient duck-people, Howard was accidentally pulled into Earth-616 by the demon Thog the Netherspawn, who was tampering with the interdimensional axis of the cosmos.

Joining forces with Man-Thing, the acting guardian of the Nexus of Realities, and the similarly displaced hero Korrek the Barbarian, the trio defeated Thog. The battle ended with Howard falling through another portal, which deposited him in the city of Cleveland.

2 Legion of Monsters Assemble

Man-Thing is a card-carrying (well, maybe not literally) member of the Legion of Monsters. The original team consisted of him, Morbius the Living Vampire, Werewolf by Night, and Ghost Rider who all came together to investigate the mysterious extraterrestrial Starseed.

While Starseed turned out to be a kind and harmless being, Morbius and Werewolf by Night attack him in a frenzy. While trying to intervene, Man-Thing accidentally mortally injured the alien with his burning touch, causing the team to disband.  Years later they reunited to help Frankencastle save the underground city of Monster Metropolis from fanatical monster hunters.

1 Nothing Can Stop the Man-Thing!

Due to his swamp-like physiology, Man-Thing is one of the most indestructible characters in the Marvel Universe. His body has a significantly porous consistency, meaning that any physical or projectile attack would simply pass straight through without doing any harm.

Even though he's been "killed" several times, he just reforms himself and after a short period is as good as new. He's been sliced into pieces by the Greek god of war Ares and even blasted by a Celestial, but has always emerged no worse for wear.
