Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe may still be mourning the loss of Tony Stark/Iron Man after the events of Avengers: Endgame, however, comic fans of the Armored Avenger are used to this kind of thing, as Iron Man has died quite a few times over the years.

Whether it's through faking his death, reality-altering events, or even decapitation, Iron Man has gone out quite a few different ways in the comics, so we'll be taking a closer look to see which of his comic deaths was most shocking, memorable, or controversial.

10 SENTIENT ARMOR

The death of Iron Man doesn't always go hand-in-hand with the death of Tony Stark, as we've not only seen other characters wear the armor to stand-in for Stark. However, the suit itself has also died at the hands of no one else but Tony Stark.

After one of Stark's new armors gained sentience (thanks to some manipulation from Ultron), he rejected the armor, which eventually led to Stark having a heart attack. However, he would survive thanks to the sacrifice of the sentient armor, who ripped out its own newly-created artificial heart so Stark would live.

9 WORLD'S MOST WANTED

After Norman Osborn took over S.H.I.E.L.D. during the Dark Reign event, Tony Stark was forced to delete the identity-compromising files of the Superhuman Registration Act and store them in his brain, which could act as a hard drive after the Extremis process.

Osborn continued hunting Stark, who had begun to delete the files in his brain, along with his memories and personality effectively wiping Tony Stark from his brain. After Osborn beat Stark into a coma, an old backup of Stark's mind was able to be uploaded to Stark's body, giving him a new lease on life.

8 IRON MAN 2020

Following Tony Stark's most recent death (more on that soon), a new body was created for Tony Stark in a bio-restructuring pod that rebuilt his body cell-by-cell, which he felt turned him into an artificial recreation of  Stark.

During the recent robot uprising in Iron Man 2020, the artificial Stark renamed himself Mark One and led the A.I. Army against his brother Arno Stark, who had taken over the Iron Man identity. Mark One managed to sabotage Arno's plans, but it came at the cost of his possibly artificial life.

7 THE CROSSING

IRON MAN - The Crossing

While the previous deaths could all be considered technicalities in some way, the first time Tony Stark officially died came in the controversial Avengers storyline "The Crossing," which saw the revelation of a traitor in the team's ranks.

That traitor was none other than Tony Stark, who had been manipulated by Kang/Immortus for years, so the Avengers decided to go back in time and find a teenage Tony Stark to fight his evil older self. The older Stark would end up sacrificing himself in the end so teen Tony could live, and fans quickly tried to forget any of this happened.

6 NERVE DAMAGE

Tony Stark was shot and paralyzed by his lover Kathy Dare, which led to Stark taking extreme methods to repair his body that included implanting technology in his spine that allowed him to walk. Unfortunately, it created other deadly complications after his nervous system was attacked by a corporate rival.

Stark began to suffer from advanced degenerative nerve damage caused by the tech in his spine, and he was forced to fake his death and enter into a cryostasis while scientists figured out how to save his life, though he let even his closest friends think he had died.

5 ONSLAUGHT

The Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four versus Onslaught

Following the creation of the being known as Onslaught, the Avengers and the Fantastic Four stood alongside the X-Men to take on the powerful threat, which had taken young Franklin Richards to steal his reality-shaping abilities.

When Onslaught's armor was destroyed and his psionic form revealed, the non-mutant heroes assembled against him were forced to sacrifice their bodies to give Onslaught form so the X-Men could destroy him. Iron Man (teen Tony Stark) sacrificed himself along with a reluctant Doctor Doom, though they would later be reborn in the Heroes Return event.

4 ARMOR WARS

Iron Man faces Crimson Dynamo in Marvel Comics

After Iron Man's tech was stolen, Stark embarked on a war against other armored characters, starting with criminals but also Avengers like Stingray and organizations like S.H.I.E.L.D. that ultimately led to the death of Titanium Man.

Iron Man later encountered the revenge-fueled Firepower and was able to fake his death in the battle, though he was severely injured. Since Iron Man's identity as Stark's bodyguard was secret, he created the fake identity of Randall Pierce and left a confession for his crimes as Iron Man before "Pierce's"  death, freeing Tony to later return as a "new" Iron Man.

3 TIME RUNS OUT

Captain America vs Iron Man during Time Runs Out

Prior to the second Secret Wars event that reset the Marvel Universe, the Avengers were divided by the actions of the Illuminati and their attempts to save Earth from a series of incursions with other universes that threatened the entire Marvel multiverse.

A final battle between the Superior Iron Man and the elderly Steve Rogers in his Stark-designed Captain America armor exploded as a final incursion threatened to destroy their world, and two old friends violently ended their relationship as a Helicarrier crashed into them, killing them both before the later multiversal reset.

2 CIVIL WAR II

Earth's heroes were again divided during Civil War II after an Inhuman's ability to see future events led to Captain Marvel attempting to take out Thanos in a surprise attack that led to the violent death of War Machine.

This set Iron Man and his supporters against Captain Marvel and hers as they battled about the ethics using the new Inhuman's untested precognitive abilities. Captain Marvel would unleash a fatal blow that destroyed Iron Man's armor and left Miles Morales/Spider-Man holding Tony's lifeless body, which may have been his authentic death if Mark One is correct.

1 INFINITY GAUNTLET

One of Iron Man's most shocking deaths came in the classic Infinity Gauntlet series that inspired the MCU's climactic match-up with the Infinity Stone-empowered Thanos, though things happened a bit differently in the comics.

The assembled heroes attacked Thanos and his newly created partner Terraxia as a diversion while Silver Surfer waited to steal the Gauntlet, though things went badly. Terraxia dealt with Iron Man by ripping his armored head off of his body, though his death and the others would be later undone with a snap.
