WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Extreme Carnage: Omega, available now from Marvel Comics.

Carnage is one of the most bloodcurdling villains for the Amazing Spider-Man, Venom and the Marvel Universe in general. The killer fusion of a red alien symbiote and the murderous Cletus Kasady, the monster has become both incredibly enduring and increasingly powerful. One of his newest forms, however, may easily be his most dangerous.

Extreme Carnage Omega by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Manuel Garcia, Cam Smith, Guru e-FX and VC's Travis Lanham ends the storyline by seeing Carnage absorb a symbiote that had merged with Iron Man's powerful Extremis armor. This Extrembiote reflects the event's name and also creates a version of Carnage with vast control over both symbiotes and technology. Here's how the fusion is born and what it means for Carnage going forward.

Iron Man in Extreme Carnage Omega

This disgusting alien symbiote first appeared in the second issue of the King In Black event as a regular symbiote that had been sent to Earth by Knull, the god of the symbiotes. Used by Tony Stark to try to save Eddie Brock's life at that moment, the symbiote had a sample of the Extremis virus uploaded into it in an attempt to keep Knull from controlling it. It would later be fused to Iron Man's armor directly and severed from Knull's influence.

Stark kept this armor in storage, though Flash Thompson warned that the symbiote wouldn't be as easy to control as his usual suits. This proved to be true in Extreme Carnage Omega, when Iron Man wore the "Extrembiote" armor to face off against Carnage and his legion of symbiotes.

How Marvel Merged Iron Man's Extremis With a Symbiote

Tony entered the fray of battle wearing the suit and temporarily removed the Carnage symbiote from its current host. This seeming victory is short-lived, however, when the Carnage symbiote begins to make the Extrembiote armor violently react to its presence. Carnage's symbiote extracts the Extrembiote off of Stark, absorbing it and gaining the Extremis-based powers. Transforming into a gigantic symbiote dragon, Extreme Carnage flies off while cackling a threat. Not only are the symbiotes as a whole more prescient of a threat, but Carnage himself just got a major system update.

Extreme Carnage's Powers and Weaknesses

The birth of Extreme Carnage is set up in the name of the very story itself, foreshadowing this powerful transformation. This form has incredible powers courtesy of being both a symbiote and an Iron Man armor powered by the Extremis virus. Its powers include the usual matter manipulation and shapeshifting of its general form, as well as projectiles and technological control associated with Iron Man's Extremis suit.

Likewise, its repulsor blasts can cleanse other symbiotes of the control of the King in Black, though they'll likely soon be assimilated into Extreme Carnage himself. It likely still possesses a key sensitivity to sound, though its technological upgrades could likely be used to circumvent this in some way.

Iron Man's former use of the symbiote also allowed it an extreme degree of possession over other beings, included the cosmic Celestials. Whether or not this control is made even stronger upon the original symbiote merging with Carnage is unknown. This incredible increase in power definitely sets up Carnage to be a much bigger threat than ever before, making the grisly now an inverse face of Spider-Man, Venom and Iron Man.
