The following contains spoilers for X-Men: Hellfire Gala #1, on sale now, from Marvel Comics

The Fall of X kicked off recently with this year's X-Men: Hellfire Gala #1, as the anti-mutant organization, Orchis, attacked the mutant nation of Krakoa in the middle of the annual Hellfire Gala, the celebration of mutantdom. Led by Doctor Stasis (one of Nathaniel Essex's clones), the attack made a point of specifically targeting the most powerful members of the X-Men on Earth (Storm is on Arakko on Mars), Iceman and Jean Grey.

Moira MacTaggert, who has thrown in with Orchis, stabbed Jean in the heart with a dagger covered with the Otherworld poison, Blightswill, which negatively affects mutant powers, but also has a negative effect on a mutant's ability to be resurrected through the traditional Krakoan Resurrection Protocols. By the end of the issue, Jean Grey's body was a smoldering skeleton. And yet, the fact that Jean Grey has a solo series tying into Fall of X by Louise Simonson and Bernard Chang is a good sign that this death will not be a permanent one. Now, too, Marvel has released a solicitation (and a gorgeous Mark Brooks cover) for November's Immortal X-Men #17, making Jean's return clearer...but there is always a twist...

Jean Grey was in her astral form after her "death" at the hands of Moira MacTaggert, and when you are as powerful as Jean Grey is, even power dampening poison might not be as limiting as you might expect. Jean has saved herself in the past with her Astral form, and with her solo series showing her revisiting her own past as she attempts to return to the present, she appears to be a major piece on the overall Fall fo X game board sooner than expected.

However, this clearly is not just a traditional resurrection like the Krakoan Resurrection Protocols, or even Jean's specific past returns (like her projection of her mind in Uncanny X-Men #281, or her many Phoenix Force-driven resurrections), In Immortal X-Men writer Kieron Gillen's recent interview with CBR's Dave Richards, he noted that in #17, "I had to become Al Ewing, in that I'm researching Marvel history for this, and I'm using emotional collage." So time will tell what Gillen means by that, and what the catch is this time around for the return of one of Marvel's most powerful mutants.
