Warning: The following article contains spoilers from Avengers of the Wastelands #4 by Ed Brisson, Jonas Scharf, Neeraj Menon, and VC's Cory Petit, available now.

Avengers of the Wastelands continues the story of the dystopian world first seen in Mark Millar and Steve McNiven's "Old Man Logan" epic in which the villains of the Marvel Universe banded together and destroyed the majority of the world's heroes. This world, which recently saw the death of Wolverine, proves once again to be a very dangerous place, as Bruce Banner Jr., the son of the incredible Hulk painfully found out in Avengers of the Wastelands #4.

The Avengers of the Wastelands are a ragtag group of heroes thrown together through unconventional means to resist the increasingly despotic rule of Doctor Doom, who serves as the ruler of the Wastelands. While this team of next-generation Avengers fights to oppose the iron grip of the madman, Doom sees the team as a threat that needs to be eliminated.

The Avengers of the Wastelands

After a battle with Baron Blood and a horde of vampires, the future Avengers discovered that Doom was systematically destroying city after city in his search for them. Shortly thereafter, Bruce Jr. uncovered a Doombot that had the coordinates for Doom's next attack within its memory stores. The Avengers feared that they were being led to a trap but were still unwilling to allow the villain to continue his pilgrimage of destruction uncontested.

The coordinates led the heroes to Osborn City, a horrifying locale filled with the bodies of dead heroes hanging from tall pillars. As the Avengers enter the walled city, a giant door slams shut behind them and the team realizes that they have indeed been led into a trap. The Avengers are almost instantly attacked by a group of supervillains led by the Green Goblin. With the element of surprise on their side, the villains initially gain the upper hand on the heroes.

The aging yet still feral Wild Child is among the first to press the villains' advantage by leaping on Bruce Jr. and slicing into his eyes with his claws. The attack proves to be successful, causing the young Hulk to scream in pain as blood runs out his eyes and down his face.

1093 Hulk Wild Child Avengers of the Wastelands

While this young version of the Hulk is nowhere near as savage as his father, he still possesses the Hulk's strength and durability. Wild Child himself admits that he knows his claws wouldn't be able to pierce the young Hulk's skin, which is why he wanted to see how tough his eyes were.

This scene brings to mind all of the times Hulk faced Wolverine in battle. While the feisty mutant has been able to wound the Hulk on more than a few occasions, he has never been able to incapacitate the brute with this kind of attack. This brings to mind the question of whether or not an attack like this would have a similar effect on the elder Banner, or if the younger Hulk was felled due to lack of experience.

This isn't the first time the eyes have been depicted as a point of weakness in nearly invulnerable foes. The unstoppable Juggernaut was forced to halt when Shatterstar jabbed swords in both of his eyes during the early days of the original X-Force.

While the movie Superman Returns saw a bullet bounce off the eye of DC's Man of Steel, that's one ability that Hulks apparently don't have. In any case, this issue makes one thing clear: the wastelands are part of a deadly, dangerous future, even for a Hulk.
