The brain of a baby and the strength of Superman. On paper, The Hulk does not sound like Avengers material.

His presence is a mixed bag in action too, ranging from mass-murdering rampages to resurrecting half of all life in the Universe. Sometimes Banner is in control and sometimes Hulk's personality fractures. Sometimes Hulk's Hulk drops by and scares fear itself.

Evil despot or big brainless dummy? Genius intellectual hero or death bomb?

Life with The Hulk is like rolling the dice in more ways than one and it's not easy to say if he's overrated as an Avenger or underrated. There are as many examples one way as there are the other.

10 Overrated: Bitten By A Vampire

Nerd Hulk (that's right, Nerd Hulk) wanted to go for a walk and see the city lights. He broke the rules so he could take a walk. Right there is the set up for The Hulk's humiliating transformation into a Vampire. One minute he's out for a nice stroll and the next,  BAM! that's all she wrote and goodnight sweet Prince.

The Hulk got whacked by a sneak attacking vampire. The Strongest there is? How embarrassing. For an Avenger to be taken out so easily makes it questionable that they were on the team to start with.

9 Underrated: Self-Imposed Banishment

Hulk

Something that gets overlooked quite a lot is The Hulk's self-imposed banishment. Knowing he is a threat to human life, he seeks to avoid people at all costs.

As a man, Bruce Banner just wants to be accepted and loved more than anything. Being burdened with the curse of The Hulk he turns his back on everything he wants in exchange for the vast empty wilderness. The Hulk just wants to be left alone because he doesn't want to be angry. That's fairly poetic.

8 Overrated: Killing Half Of New York

During the climax of Mark Millar's debut of The Ultimate Avengers, Bruce Banner does something beyond stupid. Fearing the team will be disbanded, he decides to create a threat only they can contend with by having a self-induced Hulk incident. What follows is hilarious, exciting, and depressing in equal measures as the big green rage machine rampages through New York.

Killing thousands and screaming about how horny he is while hunting down Betty Ross is far from his finest hour. It might qualify him for the ignominious title of Worlds Worst Avenger.

7 Underrated: Holding Up A Mountain

Without question,The Hulk is the strongest there is. For those with doubt, never forget that he once held up an entire mountain as it collapsed, saving The Avengers from becoming costumed pancakes. It's a single act of strength, but one that puts him in a category all of his own.

Saving The Avengers, by extension, makes him responsible for every life each one of those Avengers saves thereafter. If Hulk had failed to hold that mountain up, then the world is without Earth's Mightiest Heroes and a heck of a lot more gravestones.

6 Overrated: Conquering Earth

Hulk in World War Hulk

Did they have it coming? Probably. Does that make it right? Sort of. After being launched into the void by the "heroes" of Earth, Hulk developed a bit of a chip on his shoulder. He crash-landed on a planet named Sakaar and after trials and tribulations, became hing of that world. He had friends and a wife, more than that, he had managed to get over the disgusting treatment he received from his peers back on Earth.

Unfortunately for everybody involved, the same craft he arrived on, exploded and killed Hulks, pregnant wife. He returned to Earth stronger and angrier than he had ever been and once more proved he's a questionable choice for The Avengers team by conquering The Earth like a true tyrant.

5 Underrated: Take The Stairs

An angry Hulk is stood inside an Asgardian ship during Avengers: Infinity War

The infamous "take the stairs" scene from Endgame, at the top of Stark Tower is the perfect example of how underrated the Hulk is. When Thor and Stark mock Hulk and talk to him like an idiot for trying to enter the elevator, Hulk doesn't smash them.

The fact that he doesn't start smashing Stark, Thor, and everybody else in the elevator is a miracle. His composure and restraint at that moment is an act of heroics. Everybody knows Hulk could kill the Avengers, even the Avengers know Hulk could kill the Avengers, and yet still, they show him no respect.

4 Overrated: The Hulk Gang

An Avenger is supposed to Avenge. It's a straight forward premise and so when the heroes of Earth fell and villains like Red Skull rose to power, anybody would assume the last living Avenger would head into battle.

Nope. Not the case.

In Old Man Logan, Hulk instead chose to marry his cousin against her will and make babies... a lot of babies. These babies would be raised as thugs and bullies that would murder at will and for fun. They would extort protection money from the unlucky denizens of the wastelands. Hulk became such a lowlife monster that when Wolverine eventually got his nerve back and started cleaning house, Hulk ate him alive.

3 Underrated: He Saved The World From Bruce Banner

Does anybody remember when Hulk separated himself from Bruce Banner? Hulk went deep underground searching for solitude and became the protector and savior of the Moloids. Bruce Banner moved to an island and went full Moreau, carrying out Hulk themed vivisection on every animal he could find.

A shock to all, Bruce is the maniac and Hulk is the gentle giant. In the end, Hulk saved the world from the madness of Bruce Banner. Does it get mentioned much? Not really, no. Hulk killing Bruce Banner has some extreme existential suicide vibes. It's sacrificial in a sense. Hulk is underrated for sure, as most people forget that Banner is the real monster.

2 Overrated: Infinity War

Thanos beats up Hulk in Avengers: Infinity War MCU

Beaten up by Thanos and feeling undervalued, The Hulk spends Infinity War inside Banner like green baby. Hulk has hurt feelings and refuses to help the Avengers save half of all life in the Universe.

He is the most overrated Avenger of all time when viewed through the lens of Infinity War. It's maybe a harsh judgment given the very deep valley Hulks IQ resides in; maybe the fact that the strongest Avenger has the same levels of cognition as a 5-year-old is further evidence of him being overrated.

1 Underrated: Endgame

Hulk performing a Snap in Endgame

How could anybody redeem themselves from flat out refusing to help save half of all life in the Universe because they had hurt feelings? Turns out the answer is "bring back the dead." This is a point that gets mentioned fairly regularly and bears repeating here. Hulk is the strongest there is.

Wielding the Stark Infinity Gauntlet is the most powerful superhero feat in the whole of the MCU. Only Gods and Dance Battling Demi-Gods with back up dancers have been able to wield Infinity Stones. Hulk uses ALL the Infinity stones and he does it alone.
