Marvel's heroes come in many shapes and sizes, with many personality differences between them. Some heroes are the honorable sort, holding themselves and others around them to a higher standard. Other heroes definitely aren't. They lie, keep secrets, and will do anything to win.

Some heroes disregard rules and use their powers and abilities in unethical ways when it suits their fancy. This has made some of them rather efficient, as they'll cut ethical corners that others won't. It's affected their relationships, but more often than not, they're given a chance to prove themselves and end up going in the same dishonorable directions. They're good people, but they'll go to extreme lengths to win.

10 Emma Frost Is All About Manipulation

A close up of Emma Frost during the Hellfire Gala from Marvel Comics

Emma Frost is an example of a hero with a loose code of honor for the right reasons. She has no problem being a manipulative Marvel hero, but only because she's doing it to make sure mutants and their children are safe. Emma will lie, cheat, and use her powers to literally change minds to ensure that her people survive.

All the X-Men know this about Emma, and it's one of the reasons they respect her. They know they can just let Emma loose, and she'll come back with results that the more honorable X-Men wouldn't. Jean Grey would never manipulate the minds of the U.N. to get them to vote for Krakoan statehood. Emma Frost did it without blinking.

9 Black Bolt Will Do Anything To Make Sure The Inhumans Survive

Blackagar Boltagon, aka Black Bolt, his fork glowing with energy In Marvel Comics

Monarchs like to wear a coat of honor, but underneath is the loosest of codes. That's Black Bolt in a nutshell. He has the veneer of an honorable man, but he has one hard and fast rule: the Inhumans must survive. He'll do anything to make sure this happens, including endangering the entire mutant race to keep the Inhumans vital or allowing Attilan to be mercilessly attacked while he does the behind-the-scenes work to move the city.

Black Bolt has only one imperative in life. To keep the Inhumans going takes all manner of subterfuge and shady dealings. Black Bolt has no problem with any of this and no code of conduct other than insuring it.

8 Doctor Strange Had No Problem With Being A Member Of The Illuminati

Marvel Comics' Defenders Vol 4 Red and Black Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange is a hero with a rather large purview and is perfectly fine with cutting corners to make sure it stays safe. Strange's place as the Sorcerer Supreme meant that he was responsible for keeping the material plane safe from the machinations of the darkest magical entities out there.

All reality was Strange's to keep safe, so he had to make some hard decisions. The biggest of these was joining the Illuminati. On the surface, the organization makes sense, but it's the way they went about things. The lies, secrets, and behind-the-scenes work wasn't exactly honorable, and Strange didn't see anything wrong with their actions, even mindwiping Cap with no qualms.

7 Namor Changes Sides Like It's Nothing

Marvel Comics' Namor holds a trident under the sea

Many Marvel heroes have made hard decisions, ones they've agonized over. Namor doesn't have that problem. Namor is another Marvel monarch who cares about his kingdom first and foremost, but he definitely takes it to the next level. Namor is known for betraying the heroes he works with at the drop of a hat, going from Avenger to attacking the surface world like it's nothing.

Namor constantly hits on women who are with other men and will betray anyone he works with, except for Doctor Doom. Namor hasn't joined a group where he didn't actively hate most of the members and counted the days until he could attack them for being from the surface again.

6 Beast Has Embraced Questionable Morality

Gorilla version of Beast wearing glasses in Marvel Comics

Beast has long been the captain of the X-Men's big brain corps, but he resisted the trademark Marvel scientist amorality longer than most. All of that changed after Cyclops became the Dark Phoenix. Something broke inside the Beast, and he started to embrace a much looser code of honor, taking an "ends justify the means" stance with pretty much every decision he made.

Beast's lack of honor made him the perfect person to run X-Force, the Krakoan C.I.A., a role which has compounded his honorless way of doing things. Beast has done a complete one-eighty, using his intelligence and scientific know how in the worst ways possible.

5 Professor X Is The Worst Kind Of Manipulator

House of X/Powers of X, depicting Professor X, Magneto and Jean Gray walking through a Krakoa Gate.

Professor X founded the X-Men to fight for mutant rights, which is a laudable goal. However, underneath his facade of responsible teacher and civil rights leader, there was a heaping helping of manipulative liar. Xavier using his telepathy on humans and enemies is questionable, but not evil. Him faking his death and lying to most of the X-Men about it showed how little he trusted his own students.

That was only the beginning, as Xavier would make a habit of lying and using his mental powers on the X-Men and his associates. Xavier was all about doing whatever needed to be done, but he kept that a secret, presenting a completely different face to everyone around him.

4 Reed Richards Will Do Anything For Science

Reed Richards from Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four stares off into space

The Fantastic Four is a unique Marvel team, more about science and exploration than anything else. Reed Richards is the leader of the team, with them following his lead more often than not. Reed is all about the science, to the extent where he sort of forgets about anything else for long periods of time. Reed's zeal for science has led to some questionable places.

Reed is the original amoral Marvel scientist. He wants to make discoveries and do the right thing, but he also has few qualms about how to get there. Discovery is Reed's love and he'll do anything to keep chasing that high.

3 The Hulk Is A Monster

Ryan Ottley's cover for Marvel Comics' Hulk #1 written by Donny Cates.

The Incredible Hulk is a special case when it comes to a hero with loose honor. The childish Hulk is an example of a protection mechanism for Bruce Banner; he'll do anything to keep Bruce safe. The more intelligent Hulks have all shown a proclivity towards deviousness and aren't the most trustworthy at all times, with some notable exceptions like the Green Scar.

The Hulk is an example of a being for whom the ends always justify the means. There are so many different Hulks inside Banner, with so many different codes of honor, that on average, the Hulk's honor code has to be as loose as possible.

2 Iron Man Has Never Met An Honor Code He Couldn't Break

Marvel Comics' Iron Man from the Armor Wars comic

Iron Man has earned his bad rep. Tony Stark was an arms dealer, which isn't the most honorable profession. He became Iron Man to make a difference in the world, but constantly lied and gaslit his friends and the world about Iron Man's identity. The Armor Wars were all about him targeting people who used his tech without his permission, including fellow heroes.

Tony Stark formed the Illuminati, sided with the government during Civil War, and decided that hunting his friends was better than looking into S.H.I.E.L.D. corruption. Iron Man doesn't just have a loose honor code; he's basically completely honorless unless it fits his narrative.

1 Daredevil Is A Lawyer

Daredevil fights death angels in Marvel Comics

Many Marvel heroes are lawyers, but not all of them are as fundamentally dishonest as Daredevil has been in the past. For most of his time as an attorney, Daredevil was a defense attorney. While he did his best to not take cases where his clients were guilty, he still learned the art of duplicity and has used it often in his superheroic career.

Daredevil doesn't have a lot of problems with lying about things. He plays his cards close to the vest. He's a good man and does good things, but he's also someone who is going to obfuscate the truth if he feels he has to. This is a person who gaslit his friends about his secret identity even though they knew it. That's just who he is.
