Superman is one of the strongest heroes in comic book history. He's super strong, can manipulate both heat and cold (thanks to his eyes and his breath respectively), and, when leaping tall buildings wasn't enough for him, he learned how to fly.

But there are plenty of Marvel heroes that could easily put up a good fight against Superman and possibly win. Of course, most heroes wouldn't want to start a fight without a good reason, but they can still be enough to get Clark Kent's alter-ego shaking in his red boots. Some characters have shown to have powers Superman is known to be weak against and some are characters he just wouldn't want to fight. Even characters who lost to him in crossover events feel like they just need a second chance.

10 Hulk Lost Once Before, But Needs A Rematch

Hulks

In all fairness, the Hulk might be more physically imposing than Superman, but they have actually faced off against each other in crossover comics, with Superman usually winning over the not-so-jolly green giant. However, Superman's win was determined by a popular vote— rather than being based on how the characters were originally written— so it can be argued a rematch is in order.

The Hulk's biggest asset is that he can just grow stronger and stronger, and not just when he grows out of his clothes. He has been shown powerful enough to survive almost anything. Superman could fly him up into space, but the Hulk could quickly adapt to the vacuum of space as well.

9 Charles Xavier Has A Whole School Behind Him

Charles Xavier using his telepathy in Marvel Comics

Charles Xavier is almost like the good guy counterpart to Lex Luthor from the DC comics, a character known for getting close to bringing Superman down. And not just because they sometimes look similar.

They are both intelligent and are good at making connections. After all, Lex Luthor was the leader of the Legion of Doom. One can lead an array of villains to aid the cause of evil and one can lead an army of mutants for the side of good. Professor X might not pose much of a physical fight, but he has plenty of allies he could sic on Superman. And his mental powers shouldn't be ignored either, as Superman has fallen victim to mind games before.

8 Scarlet Witch Has Magic On Her Side

Scarlet Witch alters reality

In his own comics, Superman is regularly shown to be vulnerable against magic. as shown with him being overpowered at times by Black Adam. After all, he is a man of science and magic goes beyond the natural world. At the very least, something he doesn't understand is going to distract him long enough to send the final blow.

Whether Scarlet Witch is a literal witch or that's just her name, her powers still come pretty close, with her commanding the winds of change— essentially warping reality to her own will. Even so, it's been shown that power doesn't necessarily have to be "magic" in order to get under his skin, either.

7 Mind Mistress Emma Frost Can Make Him A Puppet

Emma Frost From X-Men

Superman has also shown a weakness against psychic powers and manipulation of the mind, no matter how advanced his alien brain is. For example, Brainiac has been shown to put him under his power, and get him to where physical attacks can be dangerous to him. In the comics, Lex Luthor once nearly lobotomized him by forcing him to grow into a giant while keeping his brain at his normal size.

Emma Frost is one of Marvel's most powerful psychics. She can wipe memories and implant suggestive memories. She has even shown powerful enough to mentally warp Wolverine by giving him the mind of a mere child.

6 X-Man Has Mind Over Matter

X-Man Nate Grey is another telepath who is capable of giving his mental powers a physical presence, even being able to create telepathic armor which he was able to use to take on the Hulk.

And the reverse is true, too: He can essentially dissolve his body into the astral plane and reverse the project, basically rendering him immortal. Ultimately, his mental powers, which include mind control and mental paralysis, could prove too much for Superman.

5 Agatha Harkness Could Magically Take Superman Down

Agatha Harkness Burn Stake

Some magic users in comics need some pseudo-scientific explanation to their powers, but others are just genuine magicians. Agatha Harkness isn't always a good witch, but she's a witch nonetheless; occasionally also a ghost, having even survived the Salem Witch Trials, likely thanks in part to being the real thing.

When she puts her powers to the test, Agatha is the type of character who can pull the strings against a character and make them think her victim is the one in control.

4 Thor Is Literally A God

Thor Mjolnir

Even the most powerful magician is nothing compared to a god, and Thor is indeed  a literal god. Added to that, he's arguably the closest Marvel hero to Superman, what with his strength and red cape, so he'd be very well-matched against Superman.

While even the Vikings thought their gods would be beaten at Ragnarok, despite fighting being their raison d'etre, Thor still has other powers that he can use against Superman, particularly magic by way of the Odin Force and the Thorforce.

3 Jean Grey Would Make Superman A Statistic

Jean Grey

Whether she's working with the heroes or against them, Jean Grey is one of the most powerful telepaths in the Marvel universe, if not the most powerful. The Phoenix force has also been shown to command multiple people at once, even without Jean herself. And without the Phoenix force, Jean is still shown to have unimaginable power.

And the end of the day, when it comes to power, for Jean it's all a manner of learning to control it, not getting more of it.

2 Sentry Is Marvel's Version Of Superman, Only Even More Powerful

Sentry

Marvel's Sentry was essentially designed to be an alternate-reality version of Superman. He's super-strong, agile, and fast, making him evenly matched against the Man of Steel. He's also functionally immortal, so it won't be easy taking him down.

But there is one stark difference: While Superman is weak to psychic powers, Sentry actually has psychic power, including being able to erase and implant memories. He also has the power to manipulate light, which should come in handy considering Superman reacts as well to red sunlight as a vampire in regular sunlight.

1 Franklin Richards Is Limited Only By His Imagination

omega franklin-richards

Franklin Richards has been shown to have god-like, reality-warping powers, meaning he could probably come up with some way to vanquish Superman just by thinking it. He could wish the sun was red or send Superman away like in an episode of The Twilight Zone.

Also, Franklin is usually cast as one of Marvel's younger characters and Superman probably wouldn't want to fight a child. He loves playing the hero so much that a positive PR spin is pretty important to him, and going to battle with a kid wouldn't be great for his PR.
