Marvel Games has teamed with multiple developers to create different video games based on the heroes of Marvel Comics. The two largest efforts so far are Marvel's Spider-Man from Insomniac Games and the upcoming Marvel's Avengers from Square Enix. After months of fan speculation concerning whether the two games will share a universe, Marvel Games head Bill Rosemann has given a definitive answer.

"Each game is in the Marvel universe, but they're in their own reality, if you will," Rosemann told Entertainment Weekly, "Currently, our plan is to keep each game set in its own Marvel universe." Rosemann went on to explain that this gives each studio freedom while developing games. However, he added that he would also attend meetings for each game, taking notes and bringing in comics to make sure each game has a "Marvel feel".

Spider-Man was recently revealed to be a PlayStation 4 exclusive character for Marvel's Avengers; creative director Shaun Escayg and combat director Vince Napoli have stressed that this version of the web-slinger fits into that game's world and has a stand-alone story arc. Insomiac is currently developing Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a standalone adventure that features Miles Morales taking up the Spider-Man mantle to protect his hometown of Brooklyn. The game is a PlayStation 5 exclusive and will be available this holiday season.

Developed by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal and published by Square Enix, Marvel's Avengers arrives on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Google Stadia and PC on Sept. 4.
