WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Miles Morales: Spider-Man #30, available now from Marvel.

Miles Morales has never had a particularly easy go of things as Spider-Man, but he has always pulled through even the worst of times with an optimistic glint in his eyes. In the face of superpowered, alien and interdimensional threats, there has always been the hopeful nature of humanity to keep him going forward. Unfortunately, Miles' latest battle has pitted him against an all too human threat -- one fueled by even more human fears and paranoia that has left him shaken to his very core. The latest conspiracy theory to rise from the fallout of the War of the Realms might be ridiculous, but that doesn't make the consequences any less real.

What should have been another ordinary day quickly becomes chaotic with the explosive arrival of a suit of Mandroid armor with an unknown pilot. It doesn't take much effort for Miles to break the inexperienced assailant's armor down, forcing the pilot out into the open where they break down in frustration over their defeat. In stark contrast to anything Miles might have suspected, the man behind the machine this time is just an ordinary guy apart from his general unhinged lunacy. As it turns out, there was no grand scheme in the works, nor was there an elaborate heist being played out. Instead, all of the destruction and near-death that has been wrought was all because of one man's obsessive fixation with a problem that doesn't even exist.

The assailant explains to Miles that he has come to stop fast-food chain Taco Gong from serving unwitting customers Frost Giant meat, and it all hinges on 2019's War of the Realms by Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman. This series saw the Dark Elf Malekith's return to bring civil war down upon his own people before leading his army across Alfheim, setting off a cascade of warfare amongst the Ten Realms that left only Midgard standing. While Malekith's forces were ultimately defeated, the event left people with a particularly negative view of both Dark Elves and Frost Giants. It's this very same deep-seated fear which has been twisted in the pages of Miles Morales: Spider-Man #30 by Saladin Ahmed, Carmen Carnero, Erick Arciniega and VC's Cory Petit.

The man Miles encounters has become genuinely convinced by internet forums and echo chambers that Taco Gong has been feeding people Frost Giant meat. Of course, there is no real veracity to those claims. That still hasn't stopped Miles' latest enemy from purchasing power armor online and using it to do real harm, though. In the end, it's a sign of the sort of narcissism that convinces people they are the protagonist in a story that no one else can see play out, when really they have just been suckered into being miserable at best and a legitimate threat at worst. In the case of the unhinged Mandroid pilot, he has become the latter, and for that Miles is left webbing him up until the authorities arrive.

As ridiculous as the very obviously fake theory behind this issue's attack is, the fact that it culminated in what could have easily been a bloodbath is genuinely horrifying. Marvel fans have already seen how humanity's fears can be weaponized against them in the pages of Extreme Carnage with far worse results than what Miles Morales has just been through. That both of these storylines are as relatable as they are only serves to make them all the more unsettling. Thankfully, the heroes of the Marvel Universe are doing all that they can to keep the world safe from the actual threats facing it, regardless of where they originate. And, if nothing else, at least the Frost Giants are alright.
