Each special contains two stories, with each tale focused on different characters. Marvel also stated the stories will tie into upcoming storylines later this year and will shape "exciting new eras" for the Marvel heroes involved.

The Venom/Hulk special was one of 12 titles announced for Free Comic Book Day's Gold Sponsor titles, including a Star Wars: The High Republic special from IDW Publishing and a Blade Runner special from Titan Comics. 51 titles in total will be released from a variety of publishers. The Free Comic Book Committee has also shifted the date of Free Comic Book Day due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Originally taking place on the first weekend of May, Free Comic Book Day 2021 will be held in August.

Free Comic Book Day 2021: Avengers/Hulk and Free Comic Book Day 2021: Spider-Man/Venom will be available on Aug. 14.
