Marvel released the first full scene from the upcoming Eternals film, which shows the superhero team in action.
The scene, titled "Run!," shows five of the Eternals, but mainly showcases the powers of Richard Madden's Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani's Kingo and Lauren Ridloff's Makkari, whose super-speed is at the forefront of the scene. While Ikaris, using his power of flight, blasts a Deviant back into the sea with energy beams from his eyes, Kingo uses his concussive energy beam powers to fight off another Deviant alongside Makkari. The scene concludes with Kingo signing to Makkari, "Nice move," after the Eternal uses her super-speed to knock a Deviant off a cliff, to which Makkari responds, "You, too."
Recent promotional materials for Eternals hinted at the group's various powers and abilities, with a recent featurette from Marvel splitting the superhero group into two distinct categories: the Thinkers and the Fighters. Kingo, Makkari and Ikaris all fall on the side of the "fighters," along with Gilgamesh (Don Lee) and Thena (Angelina Jolie). On the other side, Sprite, Druig, Ajak and Phastos are the "thinkers" of the group.
Directed by Academy-award-winning director Chloé Zhao, the superhero epic will have a lot of ground to cover with one of the MCU's longest runtimes, clocking in at two hours and 36 minutes long. The film will be split into two storylines, which will encompass a large portion of humanity's time on earth, stretching eons into the past to the modern-day. While the film itself is intended to be a standalone story, it will have major ramifications on the Marvel Universe as a whole moving forward.
"I think we stand alone as a film for sure," Zhao said in a previous interview. "But I do think we will have a very big effect on the future of the MCU with what happens in this film. Which, you know, as a fan, is really satisfying for me! I geek out."
Also revealed in previous trailers and commercials for the film, the team was brought to Earth by their creators, the godlike Celestials, to protect humanity from creatures known as the Deviants, which are featured in this new clip. It was also revealed by Ajak (Selma Hayek) that the Eternals were forbidden from interfering in human affairs unless they specifically involved Deviants, including the events of Avengers: Endgame. However, producer Nate Moore recently revealed that the film's present-day plot will see the return of the Deviants in time for a cataclysmic event known as "The Emergence," which will force the Eternals to reunite as a team after lifetimes apart.
Directed by Chloé Zhao, Eternals debuts in theaters on Nov. 5.
