A new rumor from industry insider Daniel Richtman claims that NetherRealm -- best known for developing the Mortal Kombat video games -- is developing a Marvel-themed fighting game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

This report would keep in line with Marvel's strategy of tapping other developers to create video games based on its heroes. Insomniac Games developed Marvel's Spider-Man and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Crystal Dynamics developed Marvel's Avengers. Other developers that have worked with Marvel include the now-defunct Telltale Games, which developed a Guardians of the Galaxy video game, and Team Ninja, which was behind Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order.

NetherRealm is no stranger to the superhero video game fighter, having previously developed Injustice: Gods Among Us and its sequel Injustice 2. The Injustice series takes place in an alternate universe where Superman, grieving over the death of Lois Lane, exerts his iron will over the world -- leading Batman to form an insurgency to stop him. The Injustice series has spawned an ongoing comic book series from DC as well.
