The Pet Avengers are a team of pets, animal companions and partners to a number of superheroes and teams in the Marvel Universe. The adventures of the Pet Avengers take place on Earth 97161 which is an alternate Earth to the 616 Earth on which the majority of the comic books take place.
The team consists of Inhuman “dog” Lockjaw, Zabu, the last Saber-tooth Tiger, alien dragon Lockheed, Redwing, the Falcon’s Kestrel partner, the Asgardian powered Throg, Niels aka Hairball and Ms. Lion. All of them except Ms. Lion have some kind of powers beyond their inherent animal skills.
10 Lockjaw
Lockjaw was the companion and teleporter of the Inhumans, a genetic offshoot of humanity created by the Kree centuries ago. Lockjaw aids and protects the entire Royal Family of Attilan but is particularly drawn to Black Bolt and Crystal. Lockjaw spent an extended period of time with the Fantastic Four’s Thing, Ben Grimm and the new Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan.
Lockjaw inadvertently led to the public discovery of the hidden City of Attilan and tried to help the Human Torch and Wyatt Wingfoot break through the barrier erected by Maximus. He was also important to the relocation to the Blue Area of the Moon. With his powers augmented, Lockjaw was able to teleport to the Skrull Empire to rescue Black Bolt.
9 Inhuman Or Doggo?
There was some question whether Lockjaw was actually a dog or a humanoid that had been transformed into a dog-like creature by the Terrigen Mists. This speculation was fueled by two outsiders who believed that they heard Lockjaw speak. One was Ben Grimm but this turned out to just be a prank played on him by Triton and Gorgon.
The other was Pietro Maximoff aka Quicksilver. He was convinced that something nefarious was happening that he refused to allow his daughter, Luna, to be exposed to the Terrigen Mists. It was revealed that Lockjaw had always been a dog. Lockjaw teleported his four siblings out of the womb to separate locations to prevent them from being experimented on.
8 Zabu
Zabu was the last known Pleistocene Smiloden or sabretooth tiger in existence. Zabu was born in the Savage Land, an alien created tropical preserve filled with a large array of dinosaurs and humanoid tribes that are hidden in Antarctica.
Zabu was the constant companion of Ka-Zar. Zabu saved young Kevin Plunder from being killed by the Man Apes after they killed his father. Zabu spirited the child away to the Land of the Mists, an area the Man Apes would not go. He taught the young boy to survive and grow strong. Zabu also protected Ka-zar’s wife Shanna the She-Devil and their son Matthew.
7 Lockheed
Lockheed was a member of an extraterrestrial race called the Flock. Lockheed had been a celebrated fighter of the alien insectoid race, the Brood. Lockheed met Kitty Pryde when the X-Men were kidnapped by the Brood and saved her life. Unknown to Kitty, he returned to Earth and saved her again by destroying a nest of Sidrian Hunter hatchlings. Lockheed becomes Kitty’s constant companion form thereon.
Abigail Brand “outed” Lockheed as extremely intelligent and an Agent for S.W.O.R.D. This shock came before Kitty merged with a giant bullet to save the Earth. Lockheed began to drink heavily, even after finding out Kitty was alive but trapped, seemingly forever.
6 Redwing
Redwing was the partner of Sam Wilson before he became the Falcon. Wilson bought Redwing when he was in Rio De Janeiro. When Wilson crashed a plane on the Isle of Exiles, Red Skull used the Cosmic Cube to create a telepathic link between Wilson and Redwing and changed Wilson’s personality toward the heroic to infiltrate Captain America’s life.
Once becoming the Falcon, Wilson and Redwing worked primarily in Harlem, where Wilson taught Redwing retrieval skills. Once Falcon joined the Avengers, Falcon realized that he could see through Redwing’s and other birds’ eyes. Redwing continued to aid Sam Wilson after he became Captain America.
5 Throg
Throg was an African American man named Simon Walterson. He was a football star before his knee was destroyed. Walterson married the woman of his dreams and he was devastated when she died. He wasted his fortune consulting mystics to speak to his wife one last time. Walterson found a Romani witch who made a real connection where he found out about his unborn child. Unable to pay her, the witch turned him into a frog.
Walterson traveled to Central Park and into a war between the frogs and rats. The frogs named him Puddlegulp. Another frog arrived and beat all the rats. This frog was a transformed Thor. Puddlegulp saw a group of rats about to ambush Thor and warned him. A small sliver was broken off of Mjolnir when Thor’s goat arrived to return him to Asgard. Puddlegulp used all his strength to lift it and when it struck the ground, it transformed Puddlegulp into Throg, and the sliver became the hammer, Frogjolnir.
4 Hairball And Ms. Lion
Dr. Nicolas Benson was in search of a new power source but instead opened a portal to a dimension of kinetic energy. The energy engulfed Benson’s assistant, high schooler Robbie Baldwin, and the cat Niels. It gave Baldwin powers and he created the superhero persona Speedball. Dr. Benson discovered that Niels had been exposed and it was now Robbie’s job to catch Niels for analysis.
Somehow, Niels attracted the attention of May Parker’s male dog, Ms. Lion. He has no powers beyond those of a small, yappy dog. His over-enthusiasm and rambunctious nature annoyed Niels. It was Ms. Lion that named the team.
3 The Infinity Gems
Reed Richards had discovered that the Mind Gem was on Attilan and planned to gather them all before they fell into the wrong hands. The Mind Gem fell into Lockjaw’s mouth and he used it to read Richards’ mind and went on that quest himself. Lockjaw gathered a team of animal companions to help him. They were Redwing, Lockjaw, Throg, Hairball, and tag-along Ms. Lion.
Lockjaw teleported everyone to the Savage Land where they recruited Zabu and found the Time Gem. They used it to travel to the prehistoric era where they battled Devil Dinosaur and found the Space Gem. The jump back landed them in the Atlantic Ocean and the belly of Giganto, where they found both the Soul and Reality Gems. They discovered the Power Gem on the collar of Bo, President Barack Obama’s dog. Thanos had also tracked the Gems and attacked them on the White House lawn. Lockjaw trapped Thanos in an alternate dimension. A smiling Lockjaw presented the Gems to a confused Reed Richards.
2 To Find Throg
Throg needed to find his place in the world. After consulting Thor in Asgard, Thor suggested that he talk to a Yeti. While the Yeti and Throg spoke, they were transported to the Dream Realm and attacked by the Fallen One’s Monsters. Meanwhile, the Pet Avengers traveled to the Himalayas to find Throg, sensing he was in danger.
Throg, Yeti and several magical creatures are forcefully expelled from the Dream Realm by the Fallen One. A unicorn named Damiella took control of the effort to take back the Dream Realm with the help of the Yeti and the Pet Avengers. Together they were able to oust the Fallen One and return the mystical creatures to the Realm.
1 Pet Avengers Vs. The Avengers
Captain America, Iron Man and Thor were in battle with the alien dragon Fin Fang Foom and he transformed them into frogs. Thor sent a telepathic call for help to Throg. The Pet Avengers arrived and fought valiantly but were unsuccessful against Foom and his dragons, who left for China.
In China, more Avengers join the fight and the Pet Avengers initially helped but they soon turned against the Avengers and begin to fight to keep them away from the dragons. It was discovered that the dragons and the Pet Avengers were protecting a nest of eggs. For their valiant efforts, the Avengers presented the Pet Avengers with their own pet-sized Avengers Mansion.
