Marvel Studios has officially released its first trailer for Eternals. Rather than bombastic action, the teaser takes on a more subdued tone that focuses on centuries of experiences their team has shared with the world. From their ship to their outfits, everything has meaning. Another series that shares a more serious and celestial emphasis on its outfits is Jupiter's Legacy, as the significance of the heroes' abilities is literally etched onto their outfits.

"The Celestial patterns in their costumes are a map to how they became imbued with their powers," Jupiter's Legacy costume designer Lizz Wolfe told CBR on a set visit. In the series, Josh Duhamel's Sheldon Sampson goes to an island after drawing out a map of symbols. The map ultimately leads to him and his friends obtaining superpowers and is later etched onto his outfit. The other heroes in the Union of Justice carry their stories on their suits as well. Wolfe also explained how the lichens found on the suit are similar to a language that the alien entity who grants them their powers speaks.

"So we took each of these lichens and put them into a pattern," Wolfe said, "and spun sort of a natural alphabet with characters. There are also numerical characters and totems to represent a little more of an architectural vibe of what might be their numerical system. It’s like binary.”

The Eternals outfits seem to follow a similar logic as they are also born from a cosmic presence shown in the film's trailer. In the comics, the Eternals are born through the Celestials, ancient cosmic beings that carry immense power. Their architecture and technologies are displayed in the Eternals' suits and seem to take on a more active role in the upcoming film. During one moment in the trailer, the Eternals unify their abilities, and each of their suits begins to emit symbols from their bodies. For now, there is no context as to what it symbolizes, but, like the Union of Justice, the scene serves as a glimpse at the immense power they wield as a team.

The Eternals' suits aren't the only thing that teases their celestial roots in design. Their powers and weapons also harken back to the early years when the Celestials brought them into existence. The best example of this is when Thena (Angelina Jolie) uses her powers to brandish a sword. The blade shows an intricate celestial pattern running across the cosmic weapon, and the celestial language shown on her blade likely showcases how far back their history and abilities span.

Marvel's Eternals and Jupiter's Legacy show how even designs on weapons and outfits can tell a centuries-old story for the wearers. Whether through the suits found in the Netflix series or the ornate outfits and weapons shown in Eternals, there is an undeniable connection to their outfits that convey an ancient celestial language. Even when they don't speak, their outfits will forever tell a story.

Directed by Chloé Zhao from a screenplay by Matthew and Ryan Firpo, Eternals stars Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Angelina Jolie as Thena, Barry Keoghan as Druig and Kit Harington as Dane Whitman/Black Knight. The film arrives in theaters Nov. 5.
