"The truth is, we would not have even attempted this if it weren't for [director Chloé Zhao]," Marvel Studios President/Marvel Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige told EW. "We thought, here's a filmmaker who is equal parts cinematic visionary and genre nerd. She can outtalk any of us when it comes to manga and Star Wars and Marvel comics. It's quite an astounding combination. And this movie, I think, represents all of the immense multitudes of Chloé."

Eternals was formally announced by Feige at Comic-Con International: San Diego in 2019, at which time it was given a release date of Nov. 6, 2020. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the film was forced to shift its release date several times before eventually landing on its current Nov. 5 bow. That said, it's still unclear whether Eternals will release exclusively in theaters, as recently implied by Disney CEO Bob Chapek, or if it will get a hybrid theatrical/Disney+ Premier Access release. "I think a theater would be my preference and Chloe [Zhao]'s preference," Feige said at the world premiere of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. "We will see where we go with it."
