Released amid a global pandemic after multiple delays, Eternals' domestic box office take comes in second-to-last of all the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, sandwiched between two Phase One films.

Finishing ahead of 2008's The Incredible Hulk but falling behind 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger in a report from The Numbers, Chloé Zhao's Eternals finished its domestic run with $164.87 million at the domestic box office. The second film in the MCU's Phase One, Incredible Hulk managed $134.81 million, while the fifth entry, First Avenger, pulled in $176.65 million. For reference, Avengers: Endgame currently holds the top domestic revenue spot with $858.37 million.

While The Incredible Hulk was largely seen as an improvement over the 2003 film from Ang Lee titled Hulk, it also underperformed after the massive success of Iron Man. The Hulk is also one of the few main MCU characters to have been played by two actors. Edward Norton held the role in Incredible and Mark Ruffalo has played the green giant ever since. "He had everything, and that's why he is the Hulk now," director Louis Leterrier said of Ruffalo. "He had the smarts, the size, the humor, the intelligence, the fragility."

Coming along three years later, Captain America: The First Avenger was the penultimate Phase One film. The 1940s setting helped it become one of the highest-grossing films set around World War II, but it was still the second-lowest worldwide MCU earner, just ahead of Incredible Hulk. While Chris Evans has become synonymous with the role of Cap, there was a time when Sebastian Stan was considered for it. Stan wasn't interested though. "I definitely want to be clear about this: I am extremely grateful I got this role and not the Captain America role," he insisted about his role as Bucky Barnes. "I looked at it like it was meant to be."

Though Eternals' own numbers are less than impressive, it has had quite a few obstacles in its way. Originally scheduled for a Nov. 6, 2020 release, the COVID-19 pandemic caused that date to shift first to Feb 12, 2021, and then Nov. 5, 2021, nearly a full year later. Of course, the pandemic has impacted box office numbers across the board as audiences opt to stay home.

Two other MCU films released during the pandemic, Black Widow and Shang-Chi and Legend of the Ten Rings, also sit in the bottom third on the domestic earnings list. Though it is worth noting that while Endgame still holds the top spot for domestic box office, Spider-Man: No Way Home sits just below it at $736.80 million only 46 days into its theatrical run.

Eternals is streaming now on Disney+ in both theatrical and IMAX enhanced versions.
