The X-Men are Marvel's primary team of mutant superheroes, a group of outcasts who have always represented marginalized groups in society. While Stan Lee claimed that Magneto and Professor X were inspired by the philosophies of Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., different writers have put their own spin on the powerful metaphor mutants offer to discuss complex social issues.

Despite being a team, each of the X-Men as individuals differs drastically in their personalities and beliefs. One of the best ways to try to understand these characters is by using the alignment system from the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. With that in mind, here are the alignments of X-Men characters.

10 Wolverine: True Neutral

Wolverine is probably the most famous of the X-Men. As the team's resident thug, he can come off quite gruff with his indestructible skeleton, extendable claws, and a healing factor that effectively makes him an immortal murder machine.

While Wolverine started out as little more than a pint-sized berserker who overused the word "bub," he's changed a lot over the years. He has lived as a samurai bound by the honor code of bushido, as a trained assassin leading the X-Force on black ops missions, and as a nurturing teacher who worked to shield his emotionally vulnerable students. To address all these different parts of his character, it can only be concluded that Wolverine is True Neutral.

9 Storm: Chaotic Good

Goddess. Warrior. Queen. Leader of the X-Men. Like Wolverine, Storm has been many things over the years. Unlike him, however, she possesses a few immutable traits and beliefs about the world that cannot be changed.

Storm is a natural leader and a literal force of nature. She's also deeply committed to protecting the weak and confronting injustice, especially the injustices perpetrated by those in power. Because of these traits, she is undoubtedly Good, but it is her connection to nature and her defiance of human laws in favor of protecting people and the environment that make the weather witch Chaotic Good.

8 Cyclops: Lawful Good

Scott Summers is the mutant best known for the leadership of the X-Men. He was raised from a young age by Charles Xavier, groomed for command as a child soldier.

Admittedly, Scott can be a hard character to understand. While he's been compared to a Boy Scout because of his rigid forthrightness, after the majority of mutants were depowered on M Day, he took up the responsibility of governing all of mutant-kind. He even oversaw the X-Force as they killed those enemies who threatened his people. Years later, after being possessed by the Phoenix and accidentally killing his mentor, he even led a revolution against humanity. Now, he's back to his old Lawful Good original self.

7 Emma Frost: Lawful Neutral

As the former White Queen of the Hellfire Club, Emma Frost was introduced as one of the most severe villains the X-Men ever faced. Kitty Pryde even considered Emma the very person who most represented the concept of evil.  Since joining the X-Men, Emma has grown and changed a lot.

This is not to say Emma is a paragon of virtue. She's an elitist manipulative hedonist who sees others as beneath her. She and Scott Summers also started a relationship together that began as an affair. However, she has proven herself both devoted to Scott and her teammates and she's passed up plenty of opportunities to return to villainy. She has maintained her devotion to others even when it put her at great personal risk. As such, Emma would appear to be Lawful Neutral.

6 Jean Grey: True Neutral

As the first girl of the team, for a long time, that was the limit of Jean's personality. After Chris Claremont got hold of writing the X-books, she grew and changed, the most famous change, of course, being her becoming the Phoenix.

Jean is stubborn, strong-willed, and passionate with a healthy distrust for authority that comes from lived experience. She has a chip on her shoulder and an inferno in her heart. At the end of the day, she wants to make the world better but is still driven by cynical self-interest. Jean Grey is True Neutral.

5 Nightcrawler: Chaotic Good

Kurt Wagner is the blue-furred long-tailed teleporter of the X-Men. Incredibly charming and outgoing, he's also a swashbuckling prankster. Despite his somewhat impish sense of humor, he cares deeply and intuitively for the feelings of others. Another important fact about Nightcrawler is that he's a devout Catholic.

While many fans were introduced to this character by his emo scarification-addicted counterpart in the X2 movie, he's far cheerier than any interpretation that has appeared in the live-action X-Men films. Given his extroverted theatrical way of approaching life, he is the sort of free spirit who's unmistakably Chaotic Good.

4 Kitty Pryde: Chaotic Good

Once the costume-curious kid sidekick of the team, Kitty Pryde has grown up a lot over the years. While she has assumed the role of a pirate captain in the recent Marauders series that launched this fall, she debuted back in the "Dark Phoenix" storyline as a thirteen-year-old girl with the power to phase through solid matter.

Kitty Pryde is now considered one of the team's leaders, though she is still not someone prone to following the rules. She's a free spirit and follows her heart and her intuition, which is what gives her the drive and innovation to be such a great leader. Like Nightcrawler, Kitty is Chaotic Good.

3 Deadpool: Chaotic Evil

Deadpool is not technically a mutant, but he is still part of the X-Men franchise (just ask Fox). His primary teammate is Cable and he was a key member of the X-Men's black ops squad, X-Force.

While Wade Wilson's charming quirky antics, utter rejection of objective reality, and love of smashing the 4th Wall to splinters make him a fan favorite, there is something very important to understand about the Merc with a Mouth: he kills people for money. Deadpool is not a hero. He is arguably the most evil person on this list, thus his alignment is Chaotic Evil.

2 Gambit: Chaotic Neutral

This roguish ne'er-do-well is a thief with the ability to charge items with kinetic energy. Usually, he puts this energy into playing cards which he then throws at people. His suave romantic demeanor, cool trench coat, and husky Louisiana accent make him both a hugely popular hero and a heartthrob.

Gambit has his fair share of sins to answer for, including a lot of blood on his hands. However, he's cleaned up his act and in recent stories he even married his long-time lover, Rogue. As Gambit appears to be Chaotic Neutral, one might wonder just why the X-Men seem to have so many chaotic personalities in their ranks.

1 Professor X: Lawful Evil

Professor Xavier Marvel Comics vs Squid Game

Charles Xavier is the elderly telepathic mentor of the X-Men - the elderly telepathic mentor who trained teenagers to be child soldiers, sent kids to their deaths, mind-wiped people, and developed inappropriate feelings for a pubescent girl in his care. While preaching tolerance, he also put his own people on a pedestal as "gifted." Plainly put, Professor X is not a nice guy.

This is a bit hard for some fans to accept since he is genuinely caring and kind. In the current X-books, he's set up a utopian separatist nation-state for mutants. While Professor is devoted to helping his people, mutant segregation and supremacy are not the marks of a good man. As a result he's Lawful Evil.
