Doctor Strange's replacement as the Sorcerer Supreme will get their own ongoing series in 2022.

A new teaser provided by Marvel confirms that Stephen Strange's demise in Death of Doctor Strange will have long-lasting repercussions for the entire universe. Artist Björn Barends depicts a skull exploding, with shards of bone and teeth shooting outward. The skull is drifting through space, with a blinding white light projecting from within its mouth. The text on the image reads, "a new Sorcerer Supreme will rise" while highlighting one specific word: STRANGE.

This teaser confirms that the new Sorcerer Supreme will receive their own ongoing series in March, seemingly under the title of Strange. The publisher previously announced Death of Doctor Strange #4 will be the first appearance of this new master of the mystic arts, after Strange's premature demise unleashed a wave of chaos upon the Marvel Universe.

From writer Jed MacKay, artist Lee Garbett, colorist Antonio Fabela and letterer Cory Petit, Death of Doctor Strange is a five-issue miniseries that aims to deliver on the premise of its title by ending the life of Stephen Strange. The mystery behind the identity of Strange's murderer lies at the heart of the book, as his closest family and friends try to find answers while protecting the planet. Not content to rest on the sidelines, a young duplicate of Doctor Strange has also appeared to help determine the cause of his own death. In actuality, the strangest Strange is a fragment of Stephen's soul that he had separated from his body before he ever became Sorcerer Supreme, with the intention that it would only appear in the event of his death.

In the wake of Doctor Strange's death, a murderer's row of his greatest enemies have reemerged with their own agendas. While the likes of Baron Mordo and Kaecilius have decided to hunt down Strange's murderer to prove their own superiority, a number of magic-wielders intend to take advantage of Earth's vulnerability. This has forced some otherwise unqualified combatants like the Avengers, Spider-Man and the X-Men to fight against powerful mystic villains.

While all signs point to Doctor Strange passing the torch in Marvel's comics, the character is set to have a big presence on the silver screen over the course of the next several months. In addition to Benedict Cumberbatch's Strange factoring into Spider-Man: No Way Home, the character will return for his second solo film next year. Titled Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the movie is undergoing final reshoots for the duration of 2021 ahead of its May 6, 2022 release date. With all of reality seemingly at the film's fingertips, maybe the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Sorcerer Supreme can help his comic book counterpart cheat death one more time.
