Gael García Bernal (OldY tu mamá también, Mozart in the Jungle) has been tapped to lead Marvel Studios and Disney+'s 2022 Halloween special.

According to TheWrap, production on the project is expected to begin in early 2022, and while it's werewolf-focused, it remains unclear if Bernal will, in fact, play Werewolf by Night.

The project in question was announced in August, at which time it was reported that Marvel was seeking a Latino actor in his 30s to possibly play Werewolf by Night. Shortly thereafter, reports surfaced that Marvel was circling Transformers: Rise of the Beasts star Anthony Ramos to play the lead.

Created by Gerry Conway, Roy Thomas and Mike Ploog, the first Werewolf by Night -- Jack Russell -- debuted in 1972's Marvel Spotlight #2. The character, as his name implies, possesses Lycanthropy and can transform into a werewolf, giving him superhuman strength, stamina, agility, reflexes, speed and senses, as well as a healing factor. The second incarnation -- Jake Gomez -- is a more recent addition to the mythos, debuting in Taboo, Benjamin Jackendoff and Scot Eaton's Werewolf by Night #1 in 2020.
