Eternals Film in Early Development, Marvel's Kevin Feige Confirms

President Kevin Feige has confirmed Marvel Studios is considering a film based on the Eternals as it begins to look past Phase Three.

Marvel Studios has confirmed early development of a film based on the Eternals, a super-powered evolutionary offshoot of humanity introduced in 1976 by Jack Kirby.

"Eternals is one of many, many, many things that we are actively beginning to have creative discussions about to see if we believe in them enough to put them on a slate," Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige told TheWrap, confirming recent rumors about the about project.

But for now, however, Feige is focused on Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with most of his attention placed on Avengers: Infinity War, which opens Thursday worldwide, and wrapping up Ant-Man and The Wasp, which premieres in July. Those are followed by Captain Marvel, which opens in March 2019, Avengers 4, which closes out Phase Three in May 2019, and the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, which kicks off Phase Four.

"Those are the five things that are taking up 90 percent of our time,” Feige said. “But there’s 10 percent we’re starting to go, ‘What’s going to be best?’ And some of that is you can take cues from everything we’ve done in the 22 movies before those — which is sequels to existing characters, new interpretation of existing characters and trying whole new swings with stuff that most people never heard of. So there are writers coming in on lots of different projects and lots of different ideas. And you’ll only start to hear more and more of it."

Created a million years ago through genetic experiments by the ancient cosmic race called the Celestials, the Eternals were imbued with the genetic potential to use their minds to control small quantities of cosmic energy. They also possess other abilities, and are extremely long-lived.

Industry insiders told TheWrap that a number of screenwriters have been asked to develop a story that focuses on a female Eternal named Sersi, a one-time Avengers who can use cosmic energy to make herself invulnerable and manipulate the molecules of objects or other people.
