Marvel's Dawn Of X has featured a lot of very important changes to the X-Men status quo. Finally giving mutants power on the world stage, the nation has united hero and villain, despite that maybe not being the best idea. There are more X books now than there have been at any times since the mutant heyday of the '90s, giving the line the type of diversity it needs to tell engaging stoies.

This new status quo has also elevated some mutants above others, making them leaders on the island and putting them into new teams. These mutants have become the backbone of the new state, charting the nation's course.

10 Magneto

Magneto threatening people in front of a tree

Magneto has always been an important part of the X-Men mythos, acting as the diametric opposite to Professor X. Some would argue that Magneto's a great hero but regardless of what side he's on, Magneto always commands respect. On Krakoa, he's become something of an elder statesmen, helping to chart the course of the nation.

While he's seemingly taken a step back from things, Magneto is one of the chief policy makers on the island and proved that he could still throw down with the best of them, like when he ended the Cotati invasion of the island on his own during the Empyre crossover issues of X-Men.

9 Apocalypse

Apocalypse looking menacing

Most people never thought they'd see the day when Apocalypse shook hands with Professor X, but Dawn Of X brought readers that moment. Widely feared as one of the most powerful villains in the Marvel Universe, Apocalypse's turn away from evil to band together with his fellow mutants has elevated the character, especially in the line's first big crossover, X Of Swords.

Apocalypse has made it his mission to protect the island and his people, using all of his power, knowledge, and experience to make sure that mutants don't lose the home they've gained.

8 Kate Pryde

Marauders Kitty Kate Pryde and Lockheed

Kate "Kitty" Pryde has been through a lot in her time with the X-Men, growing up a lot, shedding names and costumes like few other characters in comics. She's always been a stand out member of the team, but Dawn Of X saw her take control of the Marauders and work to smuggle Krakoan drugs to nations that didn't recognize the sovereignty of the island and to rescue mutants caught in these same countries.

Embroiled in a power struggle between Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost, Kate Pryde has risen to the challenge, proving she can be just as crafty as those two operators, and showing that she's always been a great leader, she just needed a chance to shine.

7 Beast

Beast

Beast was one of the original five X-Men and he's always had a secure place on the team, but Dawn Of X changed everything for him- instead of being relegated to the science side of things, he was made the head of X-Force, the island's black ops squadron. Over the years, Beast has been involved in some shady goings on, so this new position fits him rather well.

Given a position of power like he's never had before, Beast has had to learn on the fly and has some made some more mistakes but his overall desire to keep Krakoa safe has served him well, allowing him to make some tough decisions that needed to be made.

6 Mystique

Mystique from XMen

Mystique is important not because of her position on the island as a member of its ruling council but because of the powder keg she represents. Always one to play both sides of the fence, Mystique always has a price for her work and her price now is simple- the resurrection of her wife, Destiny. However, Xavier and Magneto have no desire of doing this because of Moira MacTaggert's bias against precogs on the island.

Destiny had already warned Mystique about something like this and for now, Mystique lies in wait. If she gets what she wants, things will be fine. If she doesn't... well Mystique is rather good at what she does and there are few who can cause trouble as well as she can.

5 Cyclops

Cyclops

Cyclops has long been one of the most important X-Men of them all, acting as the team leader and even leading the entirety of the mutant race for a time. On Krakoa, he's been made into the de facto leader of all the teams on the island, the supreme military commander, and it's a position that suits him very well. There are very few mutants on the island who could handle such responsibility but Cyclops does the job with aplomb.

He's also reunited with his extended family, made peace with Wolverine, and basically made up for a lot of his more questionable acts as leader of the mutant race. He's actually happy, which is a huge change for the once morose mutant.

4 Professor X

Professor X from XMen

Professor X will always be the spiritual leader of mutantkind and that's his role on Krakoa. While he easily could have taken all the power for himself, he instead decided to relegate power, forming a council to rule over things. While his voice is probably the most respected in the group, he never demands but shares his wisdom and experience.

He's also a key part of Krakoan resurrection, downloading the mind of every mutant to Cerebro and placing them in the new bodies the Five grow. Krakoa wouldn't exist in its present guise without him.

3 The Five

X-Factor The Five X of Swords

The Five are one of the other important mechanisms of Krakoan resurrection. This group, consisting of Hope Summers, Tempus, Elixir, Proteus, and Egg (formerly Goldballs) acts as a single unit, each of their powers playing an important part in the process- Egg supplies the eggs the clone grow in, Proteus makes them viable, Elixir gives the egg life, Tempus speeds up their development, and Hope facilitates and binds their powers together.

Resurrection has become a key part of Krakoa and without these mutants, the mechanism of it wouldn't be possible.

2 Mister Sinister

Mister Sinister Insults Kitty Pryde

Mister Sinister supplies one of the most important parts of the resurrection process, the DNA. His mutant database contains the DNA of every mutant that has lived and without it, the cloning wouldn't be possible. He's also a member of the Quiet Council, the island's ruling body.

His control over the DNA library could prove very problematic, as he's quite unstable and has been playing his own games on the island. However, his possession of it makes him one of the most important mutants on the island, one who is indispensable to the nation.

1 Moira MacTaggert

Moira Mactaggert

Without Moira MacTaggert, Krakoa never would have happened. Long believed to be a human, she was revealed to be a mutant in House Of X and her powers were quite different than any other- every time she died after the age of thirteen, she would come back to life, starting the timeline anew from the moment of her birth.

Moira has lived ten lives and watched mutantkind struggle and fall in all of them. Revealing herself to Professor X when they were young, they and Magneto worked together to set up the groundwork for Krakoa, playing the long game. Hidden on the island, she hasn't played a huge role in events but all it would take is her death to undo everything.
