Fans of the tabletop game responded positively to the recent addition, with some hoping this will ignite a Midnight Sons faction with Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider and more superheroes. Other fans hoped that Blade would become an alternative leader for the Defenders.

The Blade figure first appeared during Atomic Mass Games’ Mini-stravaganza streaming event in March, where it was unofficially announced as a prototype. Accompanying the character’s miniature was the reveal that Moon Knight would be joining the roster too.

Marvel: Crisis Protocol is a tabletop game that deals in miniatures of characters from the Marvel Universe. Similar to Warhammer, players collect and paint their miniatures before building their team to stand against other forces on a variety of different terrains.

Blade has given Marvel its horror edge since the character’s debut in The Tomb of Dracula #10 in 1973. While Dracula has served as Blade’s primary ancient foe, the “dhampir” has also battled with Morbius, the Living Vampire, who will be portrayed by Jared Leto in the upcoming live-action adaptation.

Wesley Snipes brought Blade to life in the film trilogy that began in 1998, debuting as one of the first Marvel characters to break into film. Rapper Sticky Fingaz portrayed the Daywalker in David S. Goyer’s 2006 television series, and True Detective’s Mahershala Ali is the next actor in line to give the character his bite.

Marvel Studios and Warner Bros. are reportedly eyeing the same pool of directors to helm the Blade reboot and DC’s Superman reboot. Steven Caple Jr., J.D. Dillard, Regina King and Shaka King have all been aired as possible candidates, with the latter being the favorite after directing the Oscar-winning Judas and the Black Messiah.

The comic series Heroes Reborn is also giving Blade heightened importance in the new narrative by making him the only Avenger left to make sense of an alternate world. The series is from writer Jason Aaron and artist Ed McGuinness.
