WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Revenge of the Cosmic Ghost Rider #3 by Dennis Hopeless, Scott Hepburn and Antonio Fabela, on sale now.

While the Punisher has never been against the idea of saving lives, it's never been his primary goal as a crimefighter. Instead, he's been more dedicated to fueling his own fury and murderous rage. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that he carried that aspect himself over when he became the Cosmic Ghost Rider, and he just made a huge choice for himself that could doom untold millions of lives.

The Cosmic Ghost Rider just got his humanity restored to him -- but it may have come at the worst possible time.

THE KING AND I

Upon arriving, the Cosmic King threw Cammi into a black hole. This has pushed the Cosmic Ghost Rider into going all-out against the intergalactic despot, regardless of the damage it causes to the universe around them. The Cosmic King's opening salvo sends the pair crashing into a planet and wiping out millions of innocent alien lives.

The Cosmic King tries to break Frank's spirit by pointing out just how bad he is at protecting lives, and how he destroys everything he ever tries to save. But that's not a surprise to Frank, who's been dealing with that reality for (what to him) feels like an eternity. He tells the Cosmic King about his time on the front lines of the Vietnam War and trying to fight crime on Earth. None of those wars ever gave him the chance to save lives, just take out his fury.

All of the Cosmic King's attempts to break Frank's spirit fail, and eventually Cosmic Ghost Rider unleashes what appears to be the Penance Stare on him. Cosmic Ghost Rider beats the villain down, using his overwhelming power to crush him. But that's when the Cosmic King uses his trump card: the soul he took from Mephisto.

It's Frank's soul, taken from across time and space. The Cosmic King offers it to Frank in exchange for sparing his life. Frank takes the deal in an instant, and with it, his powers seem to disappear around him. This means that Frank has been given his humanity back -- at the worst possible moment. The Cosmic King can now attack Frank and he has no power or immortality to keep him going, even though Frank seems completely uninterested in what happens to him next if it means he can finally die.

There's a chance his cosmic upgrade from his version of Galactus might still exist within him, which would still make him powerful. But his Ghost Rider attributes seem to be kaput. Suddenly, there's no one around who can bring down the Cosmic King, which could mean a lot of pain and destruction for the rest of the universe. It also means that unless there's some kind of miracle, it's unlikely that Cammi will be able to escape the black hole that the Cosmic King threw her into. While Frank got the one thing he really desired, he may have inadvertently doomed a lot of innocent lives across the galaxy in the process.
