Peter Parker made his debut as Spider-Man over 50 years ago, and has become a household name in other forms of media aside from comic books. Another young Spider-Man who is quickly becoming a pop culture icon is Miles Morales. However, Marvel Comics once considered stripping Miles of his Spider-Man moniker in favor of another codename.

According to Business Insider, the publisher did consider giving Miles Morales a new name, though there are no plans to do so at this time. "It would have made him less important," former Marvel editor Charles Beacham told Business Insider regarding Miles Morales losing the Spider-Man title. "He becomes Spider-Man with an asterisk. It takes away the power for kids who relate to this character."

Back in 2018, there were rumors that Marvel was changing Miles Morales' codename from Spider-Man to Spy-D. The setup for the name change appeared to be taking place in writer Brian Michael Bendis' final story arc on Spider-Man in 2018. Bendis co-created Miles Morales with artist Sara Pichelli, and after he signed an exclusive contract with DC, the writer proceeded to bring his Marvel obligations to an end, which included wrapping up his Spider-Man story starring Miles. The young hero began to question his role as a Spider-Man, even leaving his costume behind while he traveled to Tokyo for an undercover adventure.

This is what led to speculation that Miles would spend less time as a web-slinging superhero, thus transitioning to a new career as a super-spy. However, once Bendis left Marvel the publisher launched a new Spider-Man series starring Miles, titled Miles Morales: Spider-Man by writer Saladin Ahmed and artist Javier Garron, with many of the subplots set up by Bendis left unresolved.

Miles Morales has cemented himself as a Spider-Man alongside Peter Parker, most notably as the star in the award-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse animated movie and the upcoming Spider-Man: Miles Morales video game for the PlayStation 5.
