Wedding bells will be ringing in the Marvel Universe in 2018 -- but the question is, for whom?

Though Marvel has decided to put a halt to its yearly summer blockbuster event series with the launch of the Marvel Legacy initiative, that won't stop the company from generating buzz with other marketing tactics. For example, earlier this week, the publisher released a teaser image by artist Phil Noto for a Save the Date wedding invitation on June 20, 2018, promising the "wedding of the century."

So we know a wedding will take place, so the question is, who will be tying the knot? The promotional image shows us there have been many marriages over the years between Marvel superheroes, from Black Panther and Storm to Cyclops and Jean Grey, but apparently offers no clue as to who will be the next to say, "I do." That said, we do have a few educated guesses for couples we wouldn't be surprised to see tie the knot.

Spider-Man/Mockingbird

Spider-Man and Mockingbird both have experience walking down the aisle, albeit with different partners. In his civilian life, Peter Parker married Mary Jane Watson, while Mockingbird (Bobbi Morse) married fellow Avenger Hawkeye (Clint Barton). Though neither of these relationships withstood the test of time (the less said about the dissolution of Peter and MJ's marriage, the better), the two superheroes recently began to gravitate towards one another during All-New, All-Different Marvel's Amazing Spider-Man run in 2015.

Mockingbird worked alongside Spider-Man as his S.H.I.E.L.D. liaison for Parker Industries. Some casual flirting eventually turned to Peter crashing on Bobbi's couch after he lost Parker Industries in the fallout of Secret Empire. Peter may be relegated to the couch for now, but who's to say he won't graduate to sharing a bed with Bobbi in the near future? Spider-Man and Mockingbird would make a dynamic superhero couple: Bobbi already knows Peter's secret identity, and since she's a hero in her own right, Peter wouldn't have to worry about putting her life in jeopardy by being Spider-Man.

Colossus/Kitty Pryde

A long-running fan-favorite pairing on the X-Men side of the Marvel Universe is between teammates Peter Rasputin and Kitty Pryde. The two lovebirds have played a game of on-again/off-again for decades, with both of their perceived deaths putting a halt to things at separate times in the past. And then, there was the time that Kitty decided to join up with the Guardians of the Galaxy to patrol the cosmos (and also fall in love with Star-Lord).

Now, Colossus and Kitty are teammates once again in X-Men Gold, where they're quietly giving their romance another try. Since they already have this dating thing down to a science, all that remains is to take things to the next level. Another potential clue indicating that the Summer 2018 nuptials could be for Peter and Kitty is that X-Men Gold writer Marc Guggenheim recently teased some big changes in store for the two heroes following the comic's “The Negative Zone War” arc.

“Also expect to see some major moves in terms of Rachel, Kitty and Peter’s characters,” Guggenheim told CBR. “They all come out of this Negative Zone arc fundamentally changed.” It's difficult to imagine a more "fundamental change" than becoming engaged - save perhaps for getting pregnant...

Tony Stark/Pepper Potts

The duo gained an increase in popularity thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where Robert Downey, Jr. portrays Iron Man's alter ego Tony Stark, and Gwyneth Paltrow plays Pepper Potts. Of course, readers of the Marvel Comics stories the films are based on were used to seeing their chemistry on full display, whether they were romantically involved or not.

At this time, Tony and Pepper have both moved on in their lives, but the allure of a lost love often brings two people back together. Brian Michael Bendis, the current Invincible Iron Man writer, is leaving Marvel for DC Comics at the end of the year, and has promised to set up characters in the Iron Man "universe" for their "next big chapter," along with the "biggest Iron Man story of all time." Could that next chapter for Tony Stark and the monumental Iron Man story include proposing to his longtime girlfriend Pepper Potts?

One advantage of Marvel marrying Tony and Pepper would be to appeal to the MCU crowd and get them interested in trying out an Iron Man comic. Marvel is known to pull marketing ploys to garner attention in mainstream media, and the headline "Tony Stark Is Getting Married" is almost guaranteed to headline the evening news.

Wolverine/Jean Grey

For those of you who haven't been keeping up, Marvel is resurrecting two X-Men mainstays for its Marvel Legacy initiative. September's Marvel Legacy #1 saw the return of the original Logan, aka Wolverine, and December sees the adult Jean Grey make her comeback in a five-issue miniseries titled Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey before she goes on to headline a new series: X-Men Red.

It can't be a coincidence that Marvel has chosen this moment to "resurrect" Wolverine and Jean Grey around the same time. While Jean married her fellow X-Man Cyclops, Wolverine was always the bad boy in their mutant love triangle. Another point that should be raised is although Logan and Jean are back alive, Cyclops is still dead, having succumbed to Terrigen poisoning in Inhumans vs. X-Men. With Cyclops out of the picture, there's finally nothing stopping Jean and Wolverine from rekindling their love for one another.

Odin/Phoenix

Much was made about the presence of the 1,000,000 BC Avengers in Marvel Legacy #1, but biggest reveal took place in Generations: The Unworthy Thor & The Mighty Thor #1. The one-shot closed just as the Asgardian deity Odin locked lips with the physical manifestation of the Phoenix Force. Calling this panel a shocking Marvel moment would be an understatement, considering there's never been this type of interaction between the characters in the past.

Generations-Thunder-Odin-Phoenix

Marvel Legacy #1 kept the 1,000,000 BC Avengers appearance to a minimum, so we're forced to wonder where they will pop up next. Writer Jason Aaron teased that Marvel Legacy #1 won't be the last we see of the prehistoric Avengers, promising readers that he has plans to flesh out Odin and Phoenix's shared backstory. The cosmic beings are arguably two of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe, so if Odin and Phoenix dedicated themselves to one another, there's no telling what their union could mean down the line. Alien races like the Shi'ar, Kree and Skrulls are just some of the races whose history could find itself affected by these power players uniting, not to mention what it might mean for Earth.

Thanos/Hela

If we had to put our money on who Marvel's mysterious mysterious power couple is, our bet would be on the mad titan Thanos and the goddess of death Hela. Similar to Tony/Pepper, this heinous couple has ties to the MCU as well, making their comic book pairing just the much more likely.

Hela recently made her big screen debut in Thor: Ragnarok, where the film left her fate open-ended. The reason for this could be for Hela to reappear down the line, perhaps at the side of her new beau, Thanos. Their pairing would align with the two coming together in Unworthy Thor where, instead of falling once again for the physical manifestation of Death, Thanos is seduced by Hela -- a worthy replacement, indeed. We haven't seen the two together since then, but it's only a matter of time before they go public with their "love."

Thanos and Hela sharing a passionate kiss

Of course, another clue happens to be a pivotal MCU film featuring Thanos that happens to be scheduled for -- you guessed it -- Summer 2018: Avengers: Infinity War. Cate Blanchett's fan-favorite goddess of death is a logical (and speculated) stand-in for the physical embodiment of Death in Infinity War. The timing lines up perfectly for the publisher to plan a story arc around Thanos and Hela reciting their vows while the heroes of the Marvel Universe assemble to stop them.

When given the options of the "wedding of the century" being a simple ceremony between superheroes or two mega-villains causing chaos and destruction, the more compelling story lies with Thanos and Hela.
