Thor is one of the most powerful Avengers and one of Marvel's greatest heroes. He's faced down some of the most dangerous villains around and come in clutch in many of the Marvel Universe's greatest battles. He's been fighting the good fight for millennia and has been through a lot of changes, becoming a very different person than he used to be.

The weird thing about Thor is that regardless of all of the things he's learned over the years, he's still not actually reached his potential. Thor is a great hero but there are lots of ways he could be a better hero.

10 He Can Never Beat Hulk Even Though Should He Be Able To

Immortal hulk Thor Punch

There are lots of characters that don't like Thor and one of them is the Hulk. Hulk and Thor have clashed a lot over the years and Hulk pretty much has a flawless win record against Thor. While Hulk is the strongest one there is, the fact that he can beat Thor like a drum constantly speaks more to Thor's failure than Hulk's skill.

Thor has a variety of powers and literal ages more experience than Hulk. He should be able to take down the Jade Giant every time but he fights him exactly the wrong way, battling him with his fists and Mjolnir.

9 He's Not Very Good With His Powers

“Thor” Omnibus: “Thor” #1-4

Thor is the God of Thunder and Mjolnir enhances his already great power. He has control over storms, amazing strength and durability, and can fly. One would think that after his long life of being the God of Thunder, he'd be good with his powers but he really isn't. He pretty much just does the same thing always, throwing lightning bolts and punching people into submission.

Thor's control over lighting, thunder, and storms is actually a pretty devastating power, as proven by other weather manipulators like Storm, yet he always does the exact same moves in his fights. His enemies are easily able to overpower him because of his lack of thought in how he uses his powers.

8 He Constantly Gets Taken Advantage Of By Loki

Thor and Loki Blood Brothers Thor Loki Comic Marvel

Loki and Thor's rivalry is one of the most storied in Marvel history. Thor's taken some pretty grievous losses over the years but his defeats by Loki are always pretty bad because of how easily avoided they are. Loki's whole schtick is that he's a trickster and Thor knows this. That knowledge doesn't stop him from falling for all Loki's tricks.

One would imagine that after dealing with Loki for so long Thor would have gotten good at it but he never has. He always falls for Loki's schemes and ends up having to overcome his brother when the odds are against him.

7 He's Not Nearly As Good A Fighter As He Should Be

Thor Dan Jurgens and John Romita Jr Cropped

Thor is a Norse god, having fought frost giants, fire demons, Dark Elves, dwarves, and more for years before becoming a superhero, winning so often he became full of hubris. The bizarre thing is that he's never shown that much fighting skill since coming to Earth. He mostly just punches things and hits them with Mjolnir until they fall, sometimes throwing in a lightning bolt.

Thor makes a lot of mistakes but the biggest is a lack of dimensions to his offense. His vaunted fighting skill is nothing more than brawling with a hammer and he certainly should be better than that.

6 He's The Least Important Of The Avengers' Trinity

Marvel Trinity

While Marvel doesn't officially have a heroic Trinity like DC does, the Avengers do to some degree. Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor are considered the team's main trio. Captain America is the soul of the team, Iron Man is the brains, and Thor is ostensibly the muscle. Except when Hulk is around. Or Captain Marvel. Or Captain Universe. Or Hyperion. Or the Sentry.

Thor is the least important member of the Avengers' trinity. He's the most replaceable and even though he should bring way more to the team, being a near-immortal god with thousands of years of experience, he doesn't.

5 He's Surprisingly Ineffectual As An Avenger In General

Thor's role as the muscle of the Avengers is often taken by others and there's a good reason for that. For whatever reason, Thor is just not very good as an Avenger. It often seems like he's only there to show how tough the foe they're about to fight is, as most of their enemies have laid waste to him much easier than one would think for someone supposedly so powerful.

While he's learned to be a team player over the years, there's just something about him when he's a member of the team that makes him an ineffectual Avenger. Someone like him should be able to take out most foes, yet he gets worked all the time.

4 He Doesn't Really Learn Anything

Thor Vol 3 5 Thor Loki Lady Loki Comic Marvel

Thor has been fighting for a long time and was sent to Earth to teach him humility. This worked very well, as Thor learned to care about other people, but that's pretty much the only thing he's ever learned. Thor makes the same mistakes all the time and while the Thor of mythology isn't exactly intelligent, Marvel's Thor has always been different.

He never really learns any lesson from his adventures, making the same mistakes all the time. One gets the suspicion that he kind of enjoys the come from behind victories, as an echo of his old hyper arrogant self.

3 Jane Foster Was Better At Being Thor Than Thor Was

jane-foster-thor-dauterman-header

Jane Foster's time as Thor was one of the most fruitful times for the character. She was an amazing Thor and was actually better at it than her former paramour. She didn't bring all of the baggage of being a millennia-old god to the whole thing, being genuinely thankful for the power and what it did for her.

Thor is a great hero but the fact that he isn't even the best person to ever be God of Thunder says a lot about him. Jane Foster proved that the power of Thor could be used in more intelligent ways than Odinson ever used it and she became a hero that no one expected to be great but was, surpassing what everyone thought of her.

2 He's A Terrible Leader

Unworthy King Thor

Thor has been put in positions of leadership several times over the years, becoming King of Asgard when Odin has died, something he does pretty frequently. For someone who is the heir to the throne of Asgard, he's learned very little about being king because he's never a very good leader of Asgard.

Part of this is because he's a warrior born but so is his brother Baldur and he's done a much better job of ruling Asgard when he's had the chance. Thor was supposedly born to lead Asgard but never shows any skill for it. Even when he leads Asgardian forces in battle, his strategies are simplistic and most of the actual leading is done by Baldur, Sif, and others.

1 When He Lost Worthiness, He Tried To Keep Going As If Nothing Had Changed

Unworth Thor from Marvel Comics in 2007

Thor lost his worthiness because he stopped believing in himself but for a time afterward, he didn't really change much about how he did things, to his detriment. He attacked a group of Dark Elves and was beaten soundly, losing an arm in the battle. Afterward, depressed, he hung around Asgard, drinking too much.

Thor figured he'd be able to just go about things as if nothing had changed. There was no reason for him to believe that things hadn't changed other than wishful thinking and it cost him.
