There were a lot of important logistical matters to consider when Disney acquired 21st Century Fox, but the only thing racing through our minds was: “What does this mean for the Marvel Cinematic Universe?” Call us selfish – especially considering people lost their jobs in the wake of the deal – but we couldn’t help getting excited at the prospect of Marvel Studios obtaining the film rights to both X-Men and Fantastic Four.

And can you blame us? At long last, comic book story arcs that revolved around these supergroups weren’t off-limits for the architects behind the MCU – which means we finally have a shot at seeing them realized on the big screen. With that in mind, here’s a round-up of the storylines we’re most eager to see adapted by the MCU now that Disney owns Fox.

10 Avengers Vs. X-Men

Let’s kick things off with a no-brainer: Avengers vs. X-Men. After all, both the MCU and the Marvel comics it’s based on have a proud tradition of heroes fighting heroes – and who wouldn’t want to see Earth’s Mightest Heroes square off against the Children of the Atom?

Like Captain America: Civil War before it, we’d expect an MCU Avengers Vs. X-Men adaptation to only loosely follow the plot of the original limited series and its various tie-ins. It’s virtually a given, due to the huge disparities in continuity between the two fictional universes. But so long as the Avengers and the X-Men go head-to-head at some point, we’ll be happy.

9 House of M

Avengers and the X-Men in House of M

Avengers: Endgame co-writer Stephen McFeely recently commented that a House of M adaptation would need to be earned – and we totally agree with him. At the same time, we reckon an MCU spin on this crossover event – which sees an unhinged Scarlet Witch rewrite reality – is practically inevitable.

As we’ve pointed out before, House of M would be the perfect vehicle for Marvel Studios to introduce the X-Men and the concept of mutants into the MCU without disrupting canon. What’s more, with the WandaVision Disney+ series seemingly set to introduce the idea of the MCU Wanda altering existence itself to suit her whims, it’s not a huge leap to picture a House of M-inspired movie materializing soon.

8 Secret Wars

Let’s face it: at some point in the future, Marvel Studios is going to reboot the MCU. Sure, that moment is probably a long way off, but when it eventually arrives, we’re convinced that a Secret Wars adaptation is the most organic way to do it. That’s because this 2015 maxi-series concludes with Marvel’s core continuity re-written in a way that keeps what works and ditches what doesn’t – so an MCU version could recast "retired" stars or rejig the broken timeline without rendering earlier films non-canon.

Then there’s Secret Wars’ entertainment value to consider. For starters, it’s a sprawling epic which features the X-Men, Avengers, Fantastic Four, Doctor Strange, Black Panther and more, even as it showcases a variety of visually distinctive alternate universes. Better still, Doctor Doom – one the greatest comic book supervillains of all time – is the main baddie, which neatly sidesteps Marvel’s notorious “villain problem”, as well!

7 The Black Vortex

The Guardians of the Galaxy plus the X-Men – that’s a guaranteed recipe for awesomeness, no? This was the logic behind our inclusion of The Black Vortex, an oft-overlooked 2015 crossover that pairs the two misfit teams together for a romp in outer space.

On a deeper level, a Black Vortex-based MCU installment could explore how the earth-bound X-Men and the spacefaring Guardians are different, but more importantly, how both teams – with their emphasis on inclusion and family – are ultimately the same. So basically, it’d be an action-packed adventure peppered with “fish out of water” comedy and held together by a disarmingly emotional core, all of which sounds pretty great to us.

6 Onslaught

What happens when the worst parts of Magneto’s dark personality meld with Professor Xavier’s repressed wicked inclinations and taken on life of their own? Onslaught, that’s what. This uber-powerful big bad headlined his own self-titled crossover event, which saw him go head-to-head with the X-Men and later, characters drawn from the wider stable of Marvel superheroes.

This includes the Fantastic Four, so an MCU adaptation would be a terrific opportunity for Marvel Studios to show off its shiny new toys alongside their established (bankable) properties like the Avengers. A credible threat, a key part to play for Marvel’s Merry Mutants and First Family, and space for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to guest star? That’s gotta tick all the boxes, surely?

5 Unthinkable

Not every storyline on this list needs to be a crossover to make it worthy of an MCU adaptation. For example, now that the Fantastic Four is a Marvel Studios property, we’d love to see a flick modeled on the FF-only Unthinkable story arc.

The high point of Mark Waid and Mike Wieringo’s acclaimed early 2000s run on the title, this storyline presents the most memorable showdown between the Fantastic Four and their archfoe Doctor Doom in recent memory. But Unthinkable doesn’t just boast amazing action – it’s also jam-packed with clever plot twists, strong character beats, and rib-tickling humor. In short, it’s tailor-made for the MCU.

4 Age Of Apocalypse

OK, we know we’ve pitched a few “dystopian alternate reality” storylines already – that’s why we’re going to make Age of Apocalypse our last. After all, the MCU would grow pretty stale if it kept recycling the same once-novel conceit film after film. Nevertheless, you couldn’t seriously expect us to exclude one of the most popular line-wide crossovers in X-Men history, could you?

If nothing else, Age of Apocalypse is certainly a big enough story to justify an MCU outing – the X-Men may be the main stars, but other superheroes are still at large in this nightmarish timeline. Besides, we’d really like to see Marvel Studios work its magic on the eponymous X-villain of the piece – portrayed to underwhelming effect in X-Men: Apocalypse by the otherwise brilliant Oscar Isaac – who truly belongs among the upper echelons of MCU baddies.

3 Messiah Complex

Like Unthinkable, 2007 crossover Messiah Complex only really focusses on a single team of superheroes, only this time, it’s the X-Men. However, that doesn’t mean it’s lacking in the stakes department – on the contrary, the entire future of mutantkind hangs in the balance here.

True, a Messiah Complex adaptation is kinda reliant on an MCU version of House of M happening first, since mutants can’t become an endangered species without the words “No more mutants” being uttered first. But all that means is we might have to wait a little longer than we’d like for a Messiah Complex movie to arrive – and we can live with that.

2 AXIS

Red Onslaught Axis

AXIS met with a lukewarm reception when it hit shelves in late 2014, with many critics arguing that the mini-series failed to live up to its full potential. That’s a real shame, considering the underlying premise – the Avengers and X-Men team-up to tackle a super-charged Red Skull capable of “inverting” his victims’ morality – is a solid one.

And that’s exactly why an MCU take on AXIS would work so well: because all the filmmakers need to do is follow the story’s underlying premise and jettison any elements that misfired on the page. Indeed, an AXIS adaptation could finally allow this storyline to deliver the goods.

1 The Galactus Trilogy

Admittedly, Marvel Studios’ head honcho Kevin Feige has shown an aversion to re-treading old ground when introducing previously adapted characters to the MCU. It’s a position we fully support – nobody needs to see yet another Dark Phoenix movie, for example – but we hope Feige will make an exception when it comes to The Galactus Trilogy. Without question the definitive Fantastic Four storyline, The Galactus Trilogy was infamously mishandled in 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, but we’re confident Marvel Studios could (and should) do it right.

The best part? The FF’s battle with planet-chomping antagonist Galactus would work brilliantly as a standalone feature or incorporating the wider roster of MCU superheroes – which gives the filmmakers plenty of latitude, scale-wise. And honestly: all they need to do is give us a gigantic, armor-clad Devourer of Worlds (not some interstellar cloud) and everything else should fall into place nicely.
