Thor: God of Thunder #1 through #11 features one of the darkest passages in Thor history, the God Butcher saga. This arc, by Jason Aaron and Esad Ribić, depicts Thor's battle through time against Gorr the God Butcher. As a god-hater, Gorr is a central character to Thor's fall from grace in the following Jason Aaron's runs. Additionally, he's one of the most prolific murderers in the Thor comics.

Throughout Thor: God of Thunder, Gorr enslaves dozens of Gods to create the Godbomb, an artifact that will allow him to eradicate all gods through time and space. However, before this, he spends centuries murdering them in many gruesome ways, no matter how powerful they are. With Gorr as the main villain in Thor: Love and Thunder, it's a good time to remember his victims.

11 He Murdered Many Secondary Marvel Gods

When Thor first started suspecting something was off, he visited several deities across the galaxy only to find them all murdered. First, he found the Oaken King and the Sequoia Queen nailed to a tree. Then, he encountered the war faeries of Wendigorge rotting in their valley. After this, Thor found the Coral Immortals of Cataract, the Walkers of the Outer Void, the last of the Lava Colossi, Voord Bloodeye, the god of beheadings, Zorr'kirri, the Skrull Goddess of Love, and Yug-Sluggoth, Baron of the Elder Hell. All of them were murdered.

None of these gods had appeared in the Marvel Universe before their murder. Because of this, they don't have backstories. Instead, they're only a testament to Gorr's violence. Like the rest of the gods, they were slaughtered by the God Butcher centuries before Thor — or anyone else — noticed it.

10 A God Powered By The Enigma Force Was His First Victim

After losing his whole family due to illness and hunger despite their prayers, Gorr stumbles upon two gods — one dressed in gold, one in black — fighting, thus realizing they simply choose to ignore his world. After the gilded god asks him for help, he takes the sword of the other god and attacks them. This is the moment he decided to hunt them all.

The dark god in this story is Knull, the father of all symbiotes and the god of darkness. According to Venom #4, he survives Gorr's attack. The gilded god, originally introduced in King in Black #4, isn't as lucky. This God of Light became Gorr's first victim ever.

9 He Terrorized A Manidoog To Death

In the first pages of Thor: God of Thunder #1, Thor and his Vikings are celebrating yet another victory with mead when a kid interrupts them to show them a head floating in the river. When locking eyes with the head, Thor realizes the victim was a god. This disturbing finding is only the first of many.

Gorr's first victim in the series remains unidentified, but given that he has feathers on his head, it's safe to say he's a member of the manidoog race. They are humanoid aliens living in Giizhigong — an Earth-adjacent pocket-dimension — who serve as Native American gods. Thor: God of Thunder doesn't clarify if Gorr decimated this whole pantheon.

8 Perun & Chernobog Were Killed In Unknown Circumstances

Perun and Chernobog were two members of the Dievas, the Slavic Gods pantheon. While Chernobog the Black ruled over the night and the darkness, Perun was the god of storms. They both belonged to the Winter guard, an Avengers counterpart in Russia.

Since they were the protectors of the Vikings' enemies, Thor wanted to fight them. Unfortunately, he was unable. Perun and Chernobog never arrived at the battle. Instead, Thor found Chernobog's headless body and Perun's blood all over his battle horse. The Dievas didn't appear again in the series.

7 He Crucified Earth-14412's Volstagg

Thor: God of Thunder #6 features one of the most gruesome deaths in this comic. After catching him stealing a piece of bread, Gorr whipped Earth-14412's Volstagg the Valiant, aka the Lion of Asgard. Instead of begging for mercy, the powerful Asgardian fought back.

Predicting his own end, Volstagg pointed out the fact that Gorr himself had become a god. Of course, this enraged the villain, who ultimately crucified the Lion of Asgard. Volstagg's comment before dying foreshadows Gorr's end by the end of this arc.

6 Thor Ended Hinkon's Misery After Gorr Mutilated Him

After battling Gorr for the first time in Thor: God of Thunder #3, Thor established himself as Gorr's primary enemy. The villain recognized him as such and decided to taunt him. To do this, he left a half-dead god on Thor's path, near Lake Ladoga, close to the cave where they battle.

This god was Hinkon, the Siberian god of the hunt and a member of an unidentified pantheon. Captured while he was drunk, Hinkon couldn't stop Gorr from cutting his arms and legs and leaving him to die in the wild. Before leaving, Thor killed Hinkon himself with Jarnbjorn, ending his suffering.

5 He Hanged The Gods Of Indigarr And Left Them To Rot For Eternity

After a little girl from the Indigarr planet prayed to Thor for rain, the God of Thunder realized Indigarr's gods, the Sky Lords, were missing. To fix this, he visited their palace, where he found Lord All-Blud, Hogscarr, Vile, Krawskin, and all their progeny rotting, hanging in hooks like meat in a butcher shop.

The Sky Lords of Indigarr were prideful gods who controlled the rain in Indigarr. However, judging by this deserted planet, they weren't benevolent deities. After murdering Gorr, Thor brought the Sky Lords of Indigarr from Earth-14412 to this Earth, who turned it into a spring-like paradise.

4 Janaro And His Whole Pantheon Were Exterminated

During his journey to find Gorr, Thor meets Shadrak, a feeble nature god who survived Gorr's attack on his pantheon. This character ends up in Omnipotence City with Lord Librarian, to whom he confesses he's the god of bombs, thus revealing Gorr's plan to create the Godbomb.

While explaining the truth, Shadrak tells Lord Librarian that he escaped while Gorr killed his childhood friend, Janaro, the god of friendship. Nothing else is said about this matter. However, given Shadrak's previous lies about the brutality of his own pantheon, it's possible that Janaro was the god of something way darker than friendship. Hopefully, the film will clarify this.

3 Gorr Slaughtered All The Time Gods & Used Their Blood To Time Travel

In Thor: God of Thunder #4, Gorr traveled to Chronux, the Palace of Infinity in order to use the Pool of Forevers to travel through time. In order to do this, he needed a few drops of the Time Gods blood. Instead, he murdered them all, filling the Pool before jumping into it.

Contrary to Asgardian Gods, the Time Gods weren't war gods. Instead, they were pacifists. However, since they never interfered with human lives, Gorr found them just as useless as any other deity.

2 Falligar The Behemoth Was Thor's Friend

Falligar the Behemoth from Thor God of Thunder

During his tour around the universe, Thor stumbled upon many dead gods. However, few hurt as much as finding the corpse of Falligar the Behemoth, his friend, in Thor: God of Thunder #4.

Falligar was the Patron god of the Galactic Frontier and champion god of the Tournament of Immortals for five years straight. When Thor discovered him, he was on the shores of his homeworld, rotting. Around him, his worshipers prayed for his resurrection. Falligar's decaying corpse appears in the Thor: Love and Thunder teaser in a shot that reminds fans of the comic.

1 He Traveled In Time To Take The Heart Of An Elder God

gorr with the heart of an elder god

After successfully murdering all the Time Gods, Gorr time-traveled to the beginning of everything. In the middle of space, he found a newborn Elder God. Gorr killed the baby and took his heart back to the present, where he used the harvested organ to create the Godbomb.

Gorr was willing to murder Elder Gods, which are some of the most powerful entities in the Marvel Universe. But, additionally, he found a still defenseless one to do it. This moment is a testament to Gorr's commitment to deicide.
