In all of history, there are few mythological weapons as famous as Mjolnir. The magical hammer of the Norse god Thor, these days most people know about Mjolnir thanks to Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One part of the myth that Marvel added to Mjolnir is that for someone to wield the mighty hammer, they must first prove they are worthy.

Over the years, a shocking amount of heroes have proven themselves worthy of Thor's hammer, even some heroes who aren't from the Marvel Universe. From Deadpool to Superman, there doesn't seem to be much that connects these characters in terms of moral stance, integrity, or power level, but each of them has used the famous weapon at one time or another. The list of those who can lift Mjolnir also has a fair amount of women on it, though they aren't discussed as often.

10 Jane Foster Was The Master Of Mjolnir For Years

If Jane Foster isn't one of the most famous examples of a woman who was able to wield Mjolnir already, she will be once Thor: Love and Thunder comes out. Jane has lifted Mjolnir and taken on the powers of Thor on a few occasions, but the most famous time was in 2014 when Thor had become unworthy of Mjolnir and the hammer chose Jane as its new master. Jane Foster took on the role of Thor for four years, proving herself time and again to be worthy of the power.

9 Storm Proved Herself Worthy By Turning The Power Down

When the X-Men found themselves in Asgard, Loki gifted Storm her very own enchanted hammer called Stormcaster. Stormcaster gave the mutant even greater control over the weather as the Goddess of Thunder. Realizing that Loki was using her to attack Thor, Storm gave up the power.

Years later, during the Siege event, Storm once again came across Stormcaster. Picking up the hammer, Storm was instantly under the control of Loki, but she was able to fight off the power and, taking Mjolnir from Thor, destroyed the Stormcaster. In her decision to deny herself the power of Thor, Storm proved herself worthy of Mjolnir.

8 Power Princess Can Do Everything Wonder Woman Can, Including Lifting Mjolnir

Power Princess of the Squadron Supreme

A member of the Squadron Supreme, Power Princess was created by J.M. DeMatteis and Don Perlin as a stand-in for DC's Wonder Woman. Like Wonder Woman, Power Princess comes from a secret island - Utopia Island - and has a number of powers that make her as tough as Hyperion, Marvel's version of Superman.

Wonder Woman was able to lift Mjolnir in 1996's DC Versus Marvel by Peter David, Ron Marz, Claudio Castellini, and Dan Jurgens, and since Power Princess is essentially Wonder Woman, it stands to reason that she would also be able to lift Mjolnir.

7 Rogue's Powers Would Give Her The Ability To Wield Mjolnir

The cover of What If... Issue 66 with Rogue holding Mjolnir

One of the most famous members of the X-Men, Rogue is able to absorb the powers and personality of anyone she touches. While it has never been attempted in continuity, 1994's What If... #66 asked the question, "What If... Rogue Possessed the Power of Thor?"

In the story by Simon Furman and John Royle, Rogue - who is still a villain during the period this tale takes place - made skin-on-skin contact with Thor and was then able to use Mjolnir for her own desires, which in this instance was to destroy the Avengers. There's no reason to think this trick wouldn't work in continuity.

6 Scarlet Witch Could Just Change Reality And Take Mjolnir

Wanda Maximoff the Scarlet Witch

It's common knowledge that Scarlet Witch is one of the most powerful people in the Marvel Universe. With her ability to rewrite reality to her own wants, Wanda Maximoff can do anything from creating a double scoop of chocolate chip ice cream to almost wiping out the mutant race with three little words.

If she wanted to, Scarlet Witch could even change the spell put on Mjolnir by Odin that ensures only the worthy can lift the hammer. With a mere thought, Wanda could change it from "Whosoever holds this hammer, if they be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor" to "Scarlet Witch can possess the power of Thor" and suddenly Mjolnir is hers.

5 Squirrel Girl Used Mjolnir To Defeat Herself

Along with having the proportional abilities of a squirrel, Squirrel Girl also appears to have the power to defeat virtually any villain she comes across, including Doctor Doom and Thanos. In The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Beats up the Marvel Universe, Squirrel Girl's power was tested when she faces off against a clone of herself. The clone of Squirrel Girl, Allene, had defeated the Avengers by the time Squirrel Girl showed up and in the ensuing battle, Squirrel Girl was able to lift Thor's hammer and become the Goddess of Thunder.

4 Ms. Marvel Has All The Makings Of Being Worthy

What it means to be worthy of Mjolnir is unclear. Many people who have used the hammer have done bad things in their life - most notably Deadpool and Thor himself - so it isn't a matter of being someone who has never committed a sinful act. It seems that in order to be worthy of Mjolnir, a person must be true to themself and accept who they are - and wanting to do good is a bonus.

Kamala Khan - the current Ms. Marvel - is nothing if not true to herself. From her faith to her nerd love of all things superheroes, Kamala wears her heart on her sleeve, and in time, it seems likely that she'll get a chance at lifting Mjolnir.

3 Jocasta Can Use The Vision Exception To The Rule

In Avengers: Age of Ultron, one of the more shocking moments happens when Vision picks up Mjolnir and hands it to Thor. Why the android created by Ultron can lift the hammer is unclear, but Iron Man and Captain America both believe it is because he is a machine, not because he is worthy. As they put it - if you put Mjolnir in an elevator, the elevator can go up.

With that reasoning, another of Ultron's creations, Jocasta, would be able to lift Mjolnir with relative ease. And if Vision was able to lift Mjolnir because he is true to himself, the same can be said of Jacosta.

2 Without Gaea, There Would Be No Mjolnir

Gaea the Elder God and Thor

Also known as the "Mother-Goddess," Gaea was an Elder God who came to Earth before the planet had created life. When the other Elder Gods began eating one another, Gaea summoned the Demiurge and gave birth to the sun-god Atum.

When the second generation of gods began to appear, Gaea took on the name Jord and mated with Odin, giving birth to Thor. As one of the Elder Gods and the mother of Thor, Gaea would have little trouble controlling Mjolnir. After all, she is responsible for all the events that led to its creation.

1 Tamara Devoux Has The Ability To Do What Is Needed, Including Lifting Mjolnir

Tamara Devoux aka Captain Uniiverse

One of the people to have become the host of the Enigma Force, Tamara Devoux became Captain Universe and joined the Avengers for a time. As with anyone who becomes the host of the Enigma Force, Tamara's powers always seemed to match whatever situation she and her teammates found themselves in. While she never lifted Mjolnir while she was Captain Universe, with her ability to change matter at a subatomic level and her connection to the cosmic consciousness, it isn't hard to see how Tamara, or anyone else who gains the Enigma Force, would be able to wield Thor's hammer.
