Emma Frost has been a thorn in the side of the X-Men since her debut in 1980. The White Queen of the Hellfire Club represents one of the mutant team's most formidable threats, and on more than occasion, has been one of their staunchest allies.

Flexibility is key to understanding Emma Frost, and that is reflected in her choice of attire. Though her skin is sometimes diamond-hard, her fashion sense bends with the time period she's in. Even then, her basic look mostly echoes her original, iconic costume in style. Here are the five best and five worst costumes Emma Frost has worn.

10 Love: March Of The Black Queen

Emma Frost looks good in anything, and she knows what works for her. Her outfits often follow a basic theme, the baroque zeal of the White Queen, but also reflect her mood. Her black outfit from the All-New, All-Different era of the X-Men reflects a somber Emma grieving over the death of Cyclops (who was later revived).

Her relationship with Scott Summers has provided Emma much of the emotional context fans have had for her in the last fifteen years or so, a theme that continues in Dawn of X.

9 Hate: New X-Men

The costume Emma wore in New X-Men from Grant Morrison in the early 2000s echoes her classic White Queen look, but unfortunately, it falls into a trope that has plagued comic books for a long time.

The overt sexualization of female characters in comics rears its ugly head in this look. This costume makes it seem like she's barely wearing anything at all, and what she is wearing defies logic. This, of course, is not Frost's fault. She clearly pulls the look off but it came at the cost of objectifying a powerful and strong character, who should be remembered for such strength.

8 Love: Generation X

This costume from the mid-90s Generation X costume represents maybe the most practical and sensible Emma Frost has worn in a long time. This white jumpsuit with gold accents keeps one foot in her Hellfire past and one in her X-Men future.

At the time, Emma taught the new class of students at Xavier's School for the Gifted. Emma also wore a variation on the standard Generation X red and gold outfit, though it didn't last long (and sadly neither did this one).

7 Hate: First Class Movie

Like just about every major X-Men character, Emma Frost made the jump from the comic books to the movies. She debuted on the big screen in X-Men: First Class wearing variants on her classic comics costumes, including the White Queen and her more recent jumpsuit attire. Both looked kind of cheap given the budget and didn't convey any of the confident glam of the character.

Costumes in the X-Men films have always been hit and miss but this was one character where a great movie missed the mark and by a lot in terms of costume design.

6 Love: Headmistress

Not all of Emma Frost's many looks from New X-Men were bad. One of the best she ever wore came about as she became both co-leader of the X-Men alongside Cyclops (post-death of Jean Grey, again) and headmistress of the school.

The introduction of a jacket, an addition Emma has leaned on quite a bit in the years since, lent Emma a businesswoman quality that continues in Dawn of X. Emma Frost now occupies an even greater position of power within the new mutant order on Krakoa, and knows how to use it.

5 Hate: Phoenix Force

Emma Frost Phoenix

During the epic Avengers vs. X-Men storyline, Emma Frost is one of the five X-Men possessed by the unleashed Phoenix Force. The prospect of a Phoenix-powered White Queen should have been terrifying, but it doesn't really come to much, and neither does her costume.

Maybe it's the fact she's infringing just a bit too much on the territory of Jean Grey — and great as Emma is, she's never going to be Jean — but the costume is one of the few fashion faux pas she had.

4 Love: Dawn Of X

Emma Frost

Dawn of X sees Emma Frost rise to an unprecedented level of power. She's literally off the chain in this book, masterminding the nation of Krakoa's pharmaceutical industry in addition to other things. But chains creep into her otherwise classic look for really the first time.

Hints of gold glint off Emma in her various guises (as well as her Cuckoos), which include versions of her iconic White Queen attire and the business suit. In many ways, Emma has never looked better or been more dangerous.

3 Hate: School's Out For Teacher

Emma Frost sighs while holding an apple in her hand.

This variant of Emma's white costume debuted in Astonishing X-Men #25 in 2009. There's nothing really wrong with it, but this variant of her classic look feels slightly tacky with the unavoidable X symbol placed just so, and tackiness isn't really something that Emma Frost does.

The rest of the costume is more or less her Hellfire look, except now the cape leaves her shoulders bare rather than covers them as is usually the case. Again, it's not too bad, but not too great either.

2 Love: Classic White Queen

This costume is the original and the best. Emma Frost's White Queen costume from her first appearance with the Hellfire Club looks like it might belong on the cover of a bad romance novel, but its simplicity is overcome by the complexity of Emma's character.

C0-created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, Emma Frost cemented her place in the minds of fans forever in her iconic first appearance.

1 Hate: Phalanx Covenant

Emma Frost

The trick to designing a new costume for the White Queen is pretty simple (which is maybe why it's so hard): don't stray too far from the classic white look. This green jumpsuit from the mid-90's Phalanx Covenant crossover fails on every count.

The '90s were weird; the trends pushed for new and different looks all the time. While it's probably the simplest and most practical thing she's ever worn in any comic book, it's utterly bland and disconnected from her character. That's probably why it didn't last long.
