The events of Wolverine's upcoming event series will have major consequences for the X-Men.
In the dual five-issue miniseries X Lives of Wolverine/X Deaths of Wolverine, the X-Men's clawed Canadian travels through time to face off against a threat that could change the lives of everybody on Krakoa. The two books tell one interconnected narrative writer Benjamin Percy claims will be the "greatest Wolverine story ever told." Now, Marvel's solicitation for X Deaths of Wolverine #4 has seeming backed up Percy's claim by promising that the X-Men will be confronted by the ultimate force of their destruction.

As Wolverine's epic mission enters its eighth installment, the island nation of Krakoa will be breached by an unnamed threat with deadly intentions. Marvel previously teased that X Lives of Wolverine/X Deaths of Wolverine would be used to usher in the Second Krakoan Age of X-Men, adding further importance to this mysterious menace. The first Krakoan Age of X-Men began when writer Jonathan Hickman joined the franchise in House of X/Powers of X. Hickman's run initiated numerous changes in the lives of Marvel's mutants, with the creation of the island nation of Krakoa and the establishment of the Five, a group who could bring the X-Men back to life through a process known as the Resurrection Protocols.
Wolverine's appearance on the cover to X Deaths of Wolverine #4 shows him covered in a glowing technological grid eerily reminiscent of the Transmode virus, a weapon used by the Technarchy that overwhelms its host and transforms their bodies to become part of a living hive-mind. Given that the series will be examining Wolverine's relationship with death, it would be appropriate for the hero to finally be defeated by having his body taken over, rather than destroyed. Hickman also featured the Technarchy heavily in the distant future of the X-Men shown in Powers of X, adding credibility to this connection.
Though the chaos of X Lives of Wolverine/X Deaths of Wolverine won't be starting until January, the foundation for the story is currently being laid out in the X-Men's event, Inferno. The four-issue miniseries is the final X-Men adventure to be written by Hickman and shows the cracks in the foundation of Krakoa. After Wolverine and X-Force were brutally murdered on board the Orchis Forge, the Quiet Council decides to add new members to their ranks, in an effort to hold off their enemies. However, when Mystique uses the moment to reveal the return of her late-lover Destiny, it threaten everything that Moira MacTaggert has built.
Written by Benjamin Percy and illustrated by Federico Vicentini, X Deaths of Wolverine #1 goes on sale Feb. 23, 2022 from Marvel Comics.
