Scarlet Witch, aka Wanda Maximoff, is perhaps The Avengers' most powerful team member. Her namesake may give the impression that she is just another run of the mill magic-user, but her actual powerset is incredibly diverse. With such wide-ranging abilities, it can be challenging to pin down exactly what Scarlet Witch can do.

Magic is a broad umbrella, and Scarlet Witch's magical powers are manifold. She has shown off many of her skills throughout her long comics history. To help narrow down what makes her one of the strongest beings in the Marvel Universe, here are Scarlet Witch's most powerful techniques, ranked.

10 Hex Bolts

New Scarlet Witch fans might be wondering: What exactly is that red light she always emits? Believe it or not, her signature red magic has a name. Often referred to as hex bolts or hex spheres, they are the main conductors of her many powers. The uses for Wanda's hex bolts include energy disruption, deflection, combustion, matter control, and canceling others' powers and abilities.

Often, in order to conjure hex bolts, Wanda must concentrate and perform a gesture in the desired direction. However, she has been known to lose control and fire hexes in unintended ways.

9 Illusions

What kind of conjurer would Wanda be if she didn't create powerful illusions? The ability to target illusions at her opponents is one of Scarlet Witch's key superpowers. In doing so, she can disorient and demoralize her targets.

As seen in Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Wanda's ability to conjure powerful illusions resulted in an incredibly discouraged Avengers team. While it was one of her main powers in Age Of Ultron, it is one that has barely been revisited on the big screen since.

8 Tech Manipulation

The heroes of the Marvel Universe must face all kinds of technological foes, from Ultron to Danger and basically every member of Iron-Man and Spider-Man's rogue's gallery. It is an understatement to say that technological manipulation is among any hero's most important assets.

Lucky for Wanda, one of the perks of her brand of magic includes the ability to short circuit any form of tech. Even Ultron has learned to fear the mighty Scarlet Witch because his adamantium shell cannot defend itself from her magical attacks.

7 Mental Manipulation

This power goes hand-in-hand with Wanda's ability to create powerful illusions. However, it isn't entirely the same power. As featured in Age Of Ultron, Scarlet Witch was able to turn The Incredible Hulk against The Avengers. In doing so, she not only turned the team against itself but she also took control of one of the Marvel Universe's strongest characters.

What if Wanda unleashed this power on any other savage character, like Wolverine, or if she employed it on a cosmic being such as Galactus? Her mental manipulation is a force to be reckoned with. Good thing she's a hero (most of the time).

6 Powerful Healing Ability

A Scarlet Witch power that is often overlooked is her unprecedented gift for healing others. This ability is not the standard mutant healing factor, it is something much greater. Though many people have tried, Professor Xavier's paralysis is something that nobody had ever been able to heal. Except for Wanda.

During and after the House Of M storyline, Scarlet Witch rids the world of mutants and then brings them back. Upon returning, Charles Xavier suddenly has the ability to walk. Despite this moment being largely forgotten by comics fans, it is significant that nobody other than Wanda has ever been able to accomplish such a feat.

5 Altering Reality

Scarlet Witch Says No More Mutants

Along with her ability to create illusions, Scarlet Witch can also significantly alter reality. With such a godlike power, Wanda carries a ton of responsibility to use it for good.

Unfortunately, she has previously done unbelievably terrible things with this power. In one storyline, Scarlet Witch altered the entire Marvel universe with a simple phrase. The result was a world without mutants.

4 Withstanding The Phoenix Force

As any X-Men reader already knows, the Phoenix is a force that should not be trifled with. Almost all those who are approached by the cosmic Phoenix Force succumb to its possession. All but Wanda Maximoff.

Wanda's chaos magic powers have proven to be one of the few forces in the universe that can withstand the phoenix force. Not only can she resist its possession, but she can also fight off a Phoenix Force possessed superhuman with relative ease.

3 Creating New Realities

On top of being able to manipulate the fabric of her current reality, Scarlet Witch also has the power to create entirely new realities. This is another example of a power that goes beyond magical and into the realm of godlike.

In House Of M, as a result of significant trauma, Scarlet Witch creates a new reality where the structures of world power are tilted in favor of mutants. In the M reality, Magneto reigns supreme, at least until he gets on Wanda's bad side.

2 Access To Other Planes Of Existence

One of Wanda Maximoff's most impressive feats was the time she was able to bring Wonder Man back to life by accessing another plane of existence. There are very few earthly beings in the Marvel Universe who can reach into the afterlife and bring back a loved one.

The ability to access other realms of existence is without a doubt one of Scarlet Witch's most powerful techniques. The range of possibilities (and ret-cons) is endless.

1 Manipulating Universal Probability (She Is A Nexus Being)

In support of Scarlet Witch's godlike powers, the universe is always on her side. Whether she intends to or not, just by existing she affects universal probability. In fact, her level of luck even cancels out Domino's superpowers.

As such, Wanda is considered to be one of the Marvel Universe's Nexus Beings, a character who is a pillar of the entire Marvel reality. Wanda and all other Nexus Beings are carefully watched over by various cosmic beings and forces. In a way, the universe revolves around the Scarlet Witch.
