Gamora is one of the most important characters in the Guardians of the Galaxy, and perhaps all of the MCU. As the adoptive daughter and former enforcer of the Titan Thanos, her actions played a considerable role in both frustrating and enabling his ambitions.

Like any MCU character, her development has been charted across multiple films and creative teams, leading to some inconsistencies. Zoe Saldana always brings her A-game to each film, making her an endearing presence among the Guardians, but let's take a look at some of the ways the character doesn't always quite add up.

10 Lost In Translation

Every character from Marvel Comics that makes the jump to the big screen undergoes some changes. Some things don't make sense in a film, while others are perhaps outdated. Gamora is one of those characters that changed quite a bit from her comics roots. Introduced in 1975 in Strange Tales #180, Gamora was the sole survivor of her people, and augmented, much like her sister Nebula, into a deadly killing machine. Her martial arts abilities were such that she has been able to fight off Thanos, She-Hulk and The Thing, something she could not do given what we've seen in the MCU.

9 Her Powers Are Inconsistent

Avengers Infinity War Gamora

Gamora does possess some fierce fighting skills in the MCU, but they're largely inconsistent. She is super handy with her sword, Godslayer, but is rendered practically inert in a battle with Rocket and Groot. She loses to Peter Quill - pardon - Star-Lord in a one on one battle over the Orb of Xandar. She is helpless (which we'll come back to) when Thanos grabs her by the arm and throws her off a cliff. But, along with the other Guardians, she's able to withstand the cosmic force of the Power Stone. Hmm.

8 She Has The Technology

Another key component of the inconsistency in her character is the fact that Gamora is bionic like her adoptive sister, Nebula. As Rhomann Dey says in Guardians of the Galaxy, Gamora is 'surgically modified and trained as a living weapon.' Nebula's augmentations are more obvious, and certainly more painful, but Gamora gains much of her strength and agility from these enhancements. However, she doesn't gain any insight. One of the best aspects of the Guardians films is the evolution of Gamora and Nebula's relationship. It comes across though as a contest of wills, rather than a matter of insight. Gamora should know Nebula's pain and suffering, but she's never presented as a mirror - only a competitor.

7 Peter? Really?

infinity war star-lord

Peter Quill and Gamora have a fun, "Will They-Won't They?" relationship, but let's be real. It strains credulity. He's a good guy, a son of a Celestial, and sure, he's handsome. He's also incredibly childish, immature and maybe not the brightest bulb in the room.

Opposites attract, but Gamora voices perhaps what everyone is thinking at the end of Avengers: Endgame - 'This one? Seriously?' The number of times she rolls her eyes and expresses frustration with something he says or does should be a clue to the fact maybe he's not the best fit for her, especially considering she can't rely on him. Like at all.

6 She's Dead (?)

Gamora looking forward

Gamora seems pretty definitely dead at the bottom of that rocky monument Thanos threw her from in Infinity War. Taking fan questions after the movie opened, director Joe Russo indicated that Gamora was somehow alive within the Soul Stone. He then walked that back later, saying it was a manifestation of her soul, but not necessarily Gamora herself. That might have been clarified had a deleted scene featuring Tony Stark's grown daughter in the Soul Stone made it to the final cut of Endgame. Without it and any context, one interpretation is that she may be inside the stone.

5 Do You Know The Way To Vormir?

A major surprise in Infinity War was the location of the Soul Stone. Despite intense speculation on the part of fans for years, the stone turned out to be on a previously unknown world: Vormir. We also learn that Gamora knows the stone is there and has known for some time. How she learns this we don't know (one of many lingering mysteries). She appears to have known it for at least a while, perhaps prior to her attempt to acquire the Power Stone. If that's the case, it makes her actions in that regard curious. Another thing about the stones that doesn't make sense is...

4 Knowhere? No Way!

Despite knowing where the Soul Stone is, information that is so sensitive she makes Star-Lord swear to kill her if Thanos captured her, Gamora proceeds directly to a place she must know Thanos will be. At the end of Guardians of the Galaxy, we see the Reality Stone hidden away with The Collector on the strange world of Knowhere, actually the head of a giant Celestial. Gamora leads the Guardians there to secure it but does so with a more important bit of strategic info: the location of the Soul Stone. The most logical thing for her to do would have been to go into hiding immediately.

3 She Lives (?)

While on Knowhere the first time around, Gamora gets into a monster scrap with her embittered sister Nebula, which leads to Nebula destroying Gamora's spacecraft. Gamora is cast out into space, freezing to death in the vacuum. She lives long enough for Star-Lord to rescue her and give her his helmet.

Here's an instance where her enhanced augmentation would make sense; of course she lasts longer than the average person in space. But when contrasted with other instances in the movies where her advantages are no advantages at all, it leaves you scratching your head.

2 Wait, Where Did She Go?

Guardians of the Galaxy Gamora

At the end of Endgame, Gamora seemingly gets a reprieve from her awful fate. An alternate 2014 Gamora comes forward in time with Thanos into 2023, and in the ensuing battle, discovers that her other self  - now dead - eventually came to a reconciliation with Nebula. This spurs Gamora to take up arms against her father, but after the battle, she just disappears. Literally, no one knows where she went, or if she was dusted along with the rest of Thanos' forces by The Snap II (so far as they know). Also, we don't know if this Gamora will be a friend the next time, or a for.

1 She's A Victim

Thanos and young Gamora

For a woman billed as one of the deadliest in the entire galaxy, her life and death are ultimately predicated on the fact that she's a victim. Her life on Zen-Whoberi was tragically interrupted when Thanos brought his Halftime Show to her home planet. He massacred her family and people, and then adopted her out of some sense of sick devotion. This same devotion didn't last as he murdered her to acquire the Soul Stone, rendering her another of his many victims. For all her power and cunning, Gamora was never able to actualize it, making her fate frustrating, to say the least.
