For years, the friendly neighborhood Spidey has won the hearts of people around the world. Using his charm and witty banter, he’s made people laugh and put smiles on their faces after saving their lives. And of course, he’s out there returning that love where he receives it.

It may come as a surprise, but even someone as friendly and well-intentioned as Spider-Man can be driven to hate a person or two. This feeling would have to be hard-earned coming from the hero. It takes a lot to really get on his bad side. Once they do, it’s almost certain that they’ll bring out the worst qualities in him.

10 Kingpin — Fisk had Spidey marked for assassination after the events of Marvel’s first Civil War, but the bullet that was meant for Spider-Man ended up striking Aunt May instead, nearly killing her

kingpin

The biggest crime lord of New York, Wilson Fisk, has gotten on Spider-Man’s nerves more than once. A lot of the illegal activity happening in the city ends up being traced back to him. Spider-Man, being the hero that he is, often steps in to stop his plans from happening. It’s no surprise that Fisk would be more than bothered by him.

What finally drove Spider-Man to have full hatred for Fisk was when he had him marked for assassination after the events of Marvel’s first Civil War lead to him revealing his identity. The bullet that was meant for him ended up striking Aunt May instead, nearly killing her. In a rage, he ends up tearing through the city breaking laws — and bones — to discover Fisk’s involvement. This leads to Fisk being beaten to near death.

9 The Punisher — in Punisher: Warzone (2012), Castle faced off against the Avengers, where Spider-Man was embarrassingly defeated by Castle at the start of the story

Run-ins with Frank Castle have never been fun for Spidey. On their first meeting, he had mistaken him for being a criminal and tried very hard to kill him. They have also teamed up on occasion, with Spider-Man having to spend much of the time holding him back from killing anyone.

The most annoyed he showed to be was in Punisher: Warzone (2012), where Castle faces off against the Avengers. Spider-Man is embarrassingly defeated by Castle at the start of the story, and he spends much of the issue trying very hard to get back at him. This definitely speaks well to how he feels about the violent vigilante in general.

8 Blade — Because Spider-Man doesn’t believe in killing, they have often butted heads at the idea of how to dispose of their prey

Spider-Man’s relationship with Blade is a complicated one. While recognizing he has a very specific skill set that is needed for a hero, he doesn’t agree with how he uses it despite often letting him do so.

As a vampire hunter, Blade usually kills his prey. Because Spider-Man doesn’t believe in killing, they have often butted heads at the idea of how to dispose of them. They ultimately have mutual respect for each other even if they disagree on their fighting strategy.

7 Green Goblin — the infamous death Gwen Stacey suffered as a cause of Green Goblin’s nuisance is what drove Spider-Man to hate him so much

Upon discovering his true identity, Norman Osborne became a thorn in Spider-Man’s side. It became even more difficult to shake him off because as Peter Parker, they already knew each other so well. After all, Peter was best friends with his son Harry.

The one thing that happened that drove Spider-Man to hate him so much was the infamous death Gwen Stacey suffered as a cause of Green Goblin’s nuisance. Spider-Man never forgave himself after he accidentally killed Gwen. He certainly harbored many ill feelings towards Osborne for putting him in the situation.

6 Kraven — Spider-Man was knocked unconscious & buried for two weeks in the events of Kraven’s Last Hunt

Kraven hunting Spider-Man

Kraven the Hunter is someone who has prided himself on his many victories stalking and killing many of nature’s creatures. When he moved in on Spider-Man, it made sense that he was a bit peeved.

However it wasn’t until the events in Kraven’s Last Hunt that he really felt angry towards him. In his eyes, Spider-Man was nothing but prey to be conquered. He was knocked unconscious and buried for two weeks. On top of that, he set a giant, angry rat against him once he woke up. It’s no wonder he would be upset.

5 Wolverine — They ended up swapping bodies in Ultimate Spider-Man #66-67

Logan and Spider-Man are loveable frenemies. They seem to find themselves in situations where they have no choice but to work together, and they end up parting ways hating each other just a little bit more for it.

There are a few iconic stories where this is the case. Probably the most memorable one is when they end up swapping bodies in Ultimate Spider-Man #66-67. For readers, it was a hilarious moment. For them, it was the worst thing imaginable.

4 J. Jonah Jameson Jr. — As far as bosses go, J. Jonah Jameson is the worst

The best jobs are always the ones where a hobby can become a source of income. While this is a big truth, it’s also true to say that the work environment can make or break how much you love doing that job.

Chronically angry, he has often shouted at Peter even when he gets the job done right. The only thing that has kept him working is the fact that he’s willing to pay for the best photos of Spider-Man, something Peter ironically is the best at doing. But he only wants these photos to paint Spidey as the villain he so vehemently believes he is. Of course, this has only caused him to build hatred towards him. This grew even worse when they became step-siblings after his father, J.J.J. Sr, ended up married to Aunt May.

3 Deadpool — Spider-Man always seems to have a tough time whenever Deadpool comes to town

Almost every hero and villain that has met Spider-Man has remarked on how annoying he is. There’s only one person who has surpassed this level of annoyance, and his name is Wade Wilson.

Their relationship goes to show that Spidey is the kind of person who can dish it but can’t take it. Usually wise-cracking and delivering puns with his punches, Spider-Man always seems to have a tough time — albeit a good time — whenever Deadpool comes to town. It’s just a matter of convincing him not to kill anyone while they adventure together.

2 Doctor Octopus — After nearly manipulating Aunt May into marriage, he ended up swapping bodies & becoming the Superior Spider-Man

Doc Ock's origins are revealed

Imagine an intellectual rivalry that lasts many years, which often becomes violent. That rival then tries to marry their relative. And then, on the last strings of life, he steals their body with a mind swap, leaving them to die in their withering body.

This pretty much sums up every reason Spider-Man has to hate Doctor Octopus. After nearly manipulating Aunt May into marriage, he grew extremely weak and frail many years later. He ended up swapping bodies and becoming the Superior Spider-Man before eventually replacing Peter’s consciousness back into his body. Even though they grew to have an understanding of each other, the hate is still very palpable.

1 Venom — Venom has done more than enough to make Peter clench his fists at the sight of him

One of the worst villains ever to cross paths with Spider-Man is Eddie Brock as Venom. Having suffered humiliation as a reporter because of Spider-Man, Brock came down on his luck and was only able to find work writing for tabloids. His luck changed when he encountered the symbiote, who had an equal hatred for Spider-Man.

Deeply frightening Mary Jane Watson and then later kidnapping his supposed parents, Venom has done more than enough to make Peter clench his fists at the sight of him.
