When Marvel created the Marvel 2099 branding, it laid out a simple idea. Everything needed to be shinier, edgier, and metallic. If that sounds familiar, that’s because it was the same plan used for general rebranding throughout the ‘90s. Marvel 2099 brought a futuristic feel to the heroes fans knew and loved.

Some of them got a perfect upgrade to their characters and costumes, while others fell short on both ends. The Marvel 2099 characters and storylines have appeared several times over the years, most recently during the Secret Wars event. Since so many heroes made 2099 appearances, its time to talk about their futuristic looks. Some are good, some are iconic, and some are just plain poor.

10 10. Worst: Doom

Doom kicks off the list the same way he kicks off the Doom 2099 series, with a loss. Of all the heroes on this list, the new look for Doom is a major plot point. His classic style of skin-tight metal and green cloak are replaced by thick metal and a domed head. He looks like the Silver Surfer on steroids.

And to equalize the outfit, there are dozens of spikes just layered around his whole body. Across his belt is a giant D symbol which doesn’t work as a fear inducer, rather much more of a weirdly placed innuendo. Doom’s original costume isn’t the end all be all of the costumes, but it was better than this.

9 9. Best: Sub-Mariner

While there are a few different costumes for 2099 Sub-Mariners, the best one appears as a Defender in Secret Wars 2099. This costume is a major leg up from the original costume of Namor. While that original costume was a pair of briefs, some pointed ears, and those infamous winged ankles, there was not much else.

Sub-Mariner 2099 adds a lot of necessary changes to the costume. His skin is changed to a blue hue and he has long wavy hair. He has pants! His outfit is like a wetsuit, though it is lined with gold trim that is befitting of royalty. Even the wings get a golden upgrade.

8 8. Worst: Punisher

Frank Castle’s Punisher is costumed in a tee shirt and jeans, sometimes adding in a jacket or vest. It is simple and sets his place as an everyman hero amongst a sea of super-people. It isn’t necessary to go over the top.

Punisher 2099 introduces Jake Gallows, an anti-hero with a need for tubes apparently. His costume is made of cybernetic components that enhance his abilities, from withstanding damage to really good kicks. The problem is how extra everything is. He colors his knee and shoulder pads red for some reason and the skull connects from his shirt to his belt. There is working in a motif and then there is taking it too far. Guess which he does.

7 7. Best: Daredevil

On the opposite spectrum of where cybernetic clothing works, we get Daredevil 2099. The classic Daredevil suit is solid, so the idea of adding technology to it would make fans freak, but it works. The suit is a merging of Iron Man and Daredevil. It is responsive and maintains the sleek design of the original.

The wearer of the suit, Samuel Fisk, the grandson of Kingpin, takes great care to do the suit justice. Rather than a utility belt, he holds his items in compartments built into the suit. He even has a billy club but this version uses guns that are aimed via the suit, the bullets are sedatives, rather than the normal murdery kind.

6 6. Worst: Ghost Rider

The Terminator is a good series and a great concept and a T-800 is one of the most iconic robotic symbols in pop culture. While it is solid on its own, it doesn’t need to be brought into the Marvel universe, surrounded by fire and named Ghost Rider 2099. That is really all the costume is.

In the history of Ghost Rider, the character has stayed constant in his designs. Always a skull-faced character with some type of black clothes and a mode of transportation. Based on this, the reasonable expectation for a futuristic version would be similar. Instead, fans are presented with a literal metal head on fire.

5 5. Best: Black Widow

There have been plenty of Black Widows in the multiverse of Marvel, but Black Widow 2099 is one of the best designed. The character is designed well from her personality to her costume. The Natasha Romanoff version’s red hair was on the nose with the code name, whereas Tania’s white hair accentuates her costume and color combination.

Rather than just skin-tight black leather suit, Black Widow 2099 has an aesthetically pleasing appearance. She has a face mask that lights up red in the eyes, spider legs going down her body and stingers attached to her hands for combat. She works well as a hero and as an assassin. Also, she is a literal black widow that eats the men she sleeps with.

4 4. Worst: Iron Man

Out of the hundreds of Iron Man costumes that we have seen since his debut in 1963, the 2099 version that appears in Secret Wars 2099 is one of the worst. While keeping the red and gold motif does add some credibility to the costume, the general design elements are poor.

It should be noted that this version of Iron Man is not Tony Stark, but rather Sonny Frisco, an inventor that happens to also have dwarfism. Rather than having a suit to his size, he pilots the Iron Man armor like a mech. The problem is that it is clearly piloted. The hands-on the armor are the typical robot hand flaps and the face is a single camera with great coloring around it to bring attention.

3 3. Best: Captain America

Captain America is an iconic character and each of the heroes that have taken on the mantle have made sure to keep a similar look about them. Bucky’s Cap adds a metal arm and Falcon’s Cap adds a set of wings. The Captain America of 2099 adds intrigue to the position of Captain America.

Roberta Mendez is an enigma. Half of her is a civilian working desk support for Alchemex’s Avengers, and the other half is the Manchurian Candidate version of Captain America. Her costume keeps the same general design elements. Red white and blue with brown straps everywhere. Her costume is outfitted with tech that gives her an energy shield and energy wings. Roberta’s muscles also shift depending on which version is dominant, which is a weird but necessary addition to the character.

2 2. Worst: Hulk

The Hulk has very few things about his character that make him stand out, but those things are done well. Green skin, muscles, purple pants, and that flat-top are the look. From his early days as a character, he has seen his body shifted to become more monstrous, but in the end, it typically goes back to the classic.

Hulk 2099 is not as classic. For those fans sitting in their rooms thinking, what would the Hulk look like if he had back hair and spikes, Hulk 2099 delivers on that front alone. Looking like a merging of the Hulk, Abomination, and Venom, Hulk 2099 doesn’t hold himself in comparison to the classic look. Turns out, back hair as a character trait doesn’t really work.

1 1. Best: Spider-Man 2099

Easily the most iconic hero to come out of 2099, Miguel O’Hara has been in the public eye since his ‘90s debut. Spidey has had several influential costumes, from Bag Head to his Venom suit, proving himself to be the most adaptable hero.

Spider-Man 2099 has the classic elements mixed with a futuristic feel. The colors make the costume stick out the best. Rather than a red base, Miguel’s costume has a navy-blue base with red accents. His costume has the wrist spikes to allow for defense. Aiding his mobility, his costume also comes equipped with web-wings. The focal point of his spider emblem is well designed, allowing Spider-Man to be able to cast a little fear while also saving the neighborhood.
