Marvel Comics released a mysterious teaser image heralding the return of "the Marvels of the past."

"An old darkness rises, and with it... the Marvels of the past return," the teaser promises. Above the text is a logo that reads "The Last of the Marvels," and beneath it, confirmation that the story kicks off in September's Captain Marvel #32, by Kelly Thompson and Sergio Davilla.

Marvel teases The Last of the Marvels in Captain Marvel #32

The original Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell, was created by Stan Lee and Gene Colan and made his Marvel Comics debut in 1967's Marvel Super-Heroes #12. In the time since then, a number of other characters have assumed the mantle, including Monica Rambeau, Genis-Vell, Phyla-Vell, Khn'nr, Noh-Varr and most notably, Carol Danvers.

Carol, formerly Ms. Marvel, took on the Captain Marvel title in 2012, and shortly thereafter, Kamala Khan filled the vacant Ms. Marvel role. The former went on to transcend comics and make her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in 2019, while Kamala will make hers in her own self-titled Disney+ series later this year. The two will finally meet in 2022's The Marvels, which will also feature Monica Rambeau.

Stay tuned to CBR for more details on "The Last of the Marvels" as they become available.
