As previously reported, Marvel Studios has begun meeting with potential directors for its long-gestating Black Widow solo film. Although earlier reports suggested the studio has eyed only a handful of potential filmmakers, it's since been revealed that Marvel has met with well over sixty directors for the gig.

Details surrounding the film have been sparse, though it is expected to be a prequel. Marvel Studios hired screenwriter Jac Schaeffer earlier this year to pen the film in a collaborative process with actress Scarlett Johansson. Although five female helmers were previously said to be in contention for the gig, it's now being reported that Marvel is being "thorough" with its search and has met with well over sixty-five candidates thus far.

An earlier report confirmed that Marvel Studios had met with the likes of Deniz Gamze Erguven (Mustang), Chloe Zhao (The Rider) and Amma Asante (Belle), but Variety's Justin Kroll noted two other directors that met for the project: Maggie Betts (Novitiate) and Angela Robinson (Professor Marston and the Wonder Women). While it's unclear if the studio will decide to go with any of the previously mentioned directors, it has since been confirmed that Zhao is out of the running due to another project she's readying to direct.

Given the studio's "thoroughness," it's unlikely that Marvel will announce director anytime soon. After all, the same thing happened with Captain Marvel, as Marvel met with multiple directors for the job before ultimately selecting Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.

Johansson’s Black Widow can currently be seen in Joe and Anthony Russo’s Avengers: Infinity War, which also stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Anthony Mackie as the Falcon, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, Tom Holland as Spider-Man, Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, Chris Pratt as Star Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Vin Diesel as Groot, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, and Josh Brolin as Thanos.
