James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes, a.k.a. The Winter Soldier, is a brainwashed, man-of-mystery assassin, who has a long past with many identities. First, he was Captain America's friend and sidekick, then his enemy, then his friend again. He even became Captain America at one point, sitting in for his buddy Steve. It's hard to keep up with this mysterious anti-hero.

In a way, as comic book characters go, Winter Soldier is more relatably human than most comic book superheroes. He's not all one thing. Winter Soldier is a conflicted character. Is he a good guy? Is he a bad guy? Is he a cutie-pie guy? Let's let the fan art decide. Here are 10 Winter Soldier fan art pictures you need to see!

10 Winter Soldier: Motorcycle Model

via: Pintrest

Call the doctor! A heart-breaker just rode through town. Looking like a straight-up snack, posing hard on his motorcycle, this Bucky can get it. His eyes are so smoldering that it's burning a hole in your screen right now. Is that cold breath escaping his mask or just our breath being taken away?  What does the Winter Soldier do on his off days? He rides. When he isn't riding, he's just leaning back on his bike, waiting for danger. Let danger come, 'cause this soldier keeps his cool. That's why they call him Winter.

9 Winter Soldier Woman

A piece from artist AngusBeef30 that realizes the Winter Soldier is not a gender-specific character. The Winter Soldier is a symbol of brooding badassery. Drawn in a female anime style, this character pulls off the tough girl look with a classic shot of a hero lost in thought. The wind is about to blow through her hair as she looks off into the distance.

There is a female Bucky in the Marvel Universe from Earth-616 named Rebecca "Rikki" Barnes who first appeared in Heroes Reborn #1/2 back in 1996. Her backstory, reincarnation powers and multi-reality existence is enough to explode any comic fan's brain. The look on your face trying to figure out Rebecca Barnes' storyline would be a lot like our Winter Soldier Woman here. Lost in Marvel thought.

8 Winter Soldier Reflects

Here's a uniquely styled piece of fan art from artist Masaolab. It's as if Captain America's light is streaking through Winter Soldier. Pieces of Captain America's costume can be seen blending with Winter Soldier's because both characters are reflections of each other. The story of this piece symbolizes that Cap's hero spirit reflects through all who fought alongside him.

Whether it's been Winter Soldier, Falcon, or all of the Avengers, Captain America inspires the hero within all his teammates. The artwork here examines that hero within. The light in the dark. The hero who was once the villain. The path to redemption. This fan art shows Winter Soldier discovering his inner light.

7 Winter Soldier Catches Cap's Shield

An action piece of Winter Soldier snatching that shield. Everything about this image is simply cool. From the shield cutting through the smoke to the giant weapon on Winter Soldier's back, this is the assassin in top form. Winter Soldier physically catching Cap's shield, presumably thrown by Captain America, is a testament to Bucky's cybernetic arm. Considering one of the strongest characters in the Marvel Universe threw that shield, logic suggests that most people hit by the flying disc that defies science would be killed. Not the Winter Soldier though. He has a cybernetic arm built from the same Vibramium as the shield. It takes a super-soldier to catch a super-soldier's shield.

6 Frozen Winter Soldier

Do you want to build a snowman, Winter Soldier? Buck doesn't always need to be badass or cool. He can sometimes just be cute. This Frozen/Marvel mash-up is a funny take on Cap and Buck's relationship. Their relationship in the comics and the MCU is somewhat tragic, but this is flat out adorable. It's as if Winter Soldier hurt Cap with his winter powers, then locked himself in his bedroom. Cap just wants to spend time with his best bud, asking if he wants to build a snowman, but all Cap hears from the other side of the door is, "Go away, Steve."

5 Winter Soldier Is On Fire!

This piece from Alice X. Zhang a.k.a. AliceXZ is powerful. It's literally the Winter Soldier walking through fire. Using red as a bold focal color, the eye is drawn to the centerpiece of the red star on the bionic arm. The red star is a symbol of what being the Winter Soldier means. It represents the fragility of Bucky Barnes' mind, a reminder of being brainwashed, having his identity burned away.

He thought himself a Soviet operative, only to find out he was a puppet of Hydra, then to realize his true identity of James Buchanan Barnes, all suggest this is a man who longs to know himself, his true self. He will burn away his past in order to discover who he really is.

4 Winter Soldier vs. Iron Man

In the MCU, the Winter Soldier is responsible for killing Iron Man's parents. This image from artist SangHyun Yu encapsulates this story with the physical representation of what Iron Man feels like. The Winter Soldier crushed Iron Man's heart. The idea originated from the film Captain America: Civil War. The story unfolds in the film with Iron Man destroying Winter Soldier's cybernetic arm. In an alternate universe, when faced with the question, who would win in a fight? Iron Man or Winter Soldier? This artwork suggests that Winter Soldier would win with a bionic punch to the chest. You take out that arc reactor heart, you take out Iron Man.

3 Winter Soldier Shows Off His Guns

Look at the guns on this guy. This Winter Soldier is packing heat and that doesn't refer to the M16 with a grenade launcher or the sub-machine gun on his back. That cybernetically enhanced arm looks physically threatening. The bowling ball shoulder with a bicep bigger than Buck's head looks like it wants to pop off the page and force you to go to the gym.

Artist Winston Wesley captures the power behind the bionic appendage. Winter Soldier is carrying three weapons, but he clearly only needs one. That arm looks like it can deflect bullets, punch a hole through a building, and refrigerate your groceries. If we add a caption to this image, Winter Soldier would be like, "Want a beer, bro? Got a case in my arm."

2 Winter Soldier Loves Captain Teddy Bear

Let's say it together, "Awww..." This cute image of Winter Soldier hugging his Captain America Teddy Bear is endearing. Artist Em could inspire world peace with a series of Teddy Bear Avengers. Teddy Bear Avengers assemble because the world could use some extra love right now. Winter Soldier is usually the embodiment of fear and death but it's fun to reimagine him as a cute little kid before his life became all assassin-y. Before being corrupted by Hydra, he was just a boy who gave hugs and lovins to his stuffed animals. We love you too, Buck.

1 Winter Soldier Takes Aim

This recreation of a shot from arguably one of the best MCU films, Captain America: Winter Soldier faithfully captures the realism of actor's Sebastian Stan's eyes. Artist Vycal manipulates his image to feel like a real shot captured on film as if we are witnessing the focus pull in the camera, blurring the gun in the foreground as the lens dials in on the eyes.

The moment in the film when this shot occurs takes place during the scene where Winter Soldier believes he's got the drop on Black Widow. He rolls a grenade under a car where it comes to a stop next to a recording Black Widow left as a decoy. The grenade explodes and the light from the explosion is the same blast of light that is captured in this art piece. Black Widow is about to jump on the soldier from behind and kick him in the face. Look behind you, Bucky!
