The Golden Age of comics introduced many iconic characters, one of them being Captain America. This was also an era that gave us some of the first female characters in what would become Marvel Comics. Some were superheroes, and others had more mundane roles in life.

Many of them were given supporting roles in dozens of comics, and some even got their own series due to being so popular. Many of these characters were created to appeal to and create a market for girls and women, and not just have comics be for boys and men. Some of them have survived the test time better than others, though all deserve respect for their important role in early representation for female characters in comic books.

10 Lorna The Jungle Queen

Lorna the Jungle Queen

Lorna the Jungle Queen is one of the more obscure Golden Age heroines. She was created by Don Rico and Werner Roth. She is a hunter, tracker, and survivalist with a strong connection to animals. Lorna had two solo series, the first being Lorna the Jungle Queen, and the second being Lorna, the Jungle Girl.

In these series, she went on adventures throughout the jungle. Lorna was accompanied by a monkey named Mikki, and a conservationist named Greg Knight.

9 Chili Storm

Chili Storm is a model who was introduced as a rival to Millie Collins. Over the course of many years, the two's dynamic changed and they became very close friends.

Chili was featured in Model's, Inc., a comic series that was a murder mystery story, set during Fashion Week. Chili is also a friend of Janet van Dyne, aka The Wasp. While Chili is not a superhero in the main continuity, she has been a superhero known as the Lynx in several alternate realities.

8 Blonde Phantom

Created by Stan Lee and Syd Shores, Louise Grant is the superheroine known as the Blonde Phantom. She has been a part of many teams, including the Invaders, All-Winners Squad, and the Avengers. Blonde Phantom is a talented fighter, martial artist, and detective. She is also a friend of Jennifer Walters, aka She-Hulk.

Louise was a major supporting character in Sensational She-Hulk Vol. 1 and helped Jennifer with a few legal cases. Louise even has a daughter who followed in her mother's footsteps and became a superheroine.

7 Golden Girl

Golden Girl

Golden Girl is the superhero identity of the heroine Betsy Ross. She debuted in Captain America Comics Vol. 1 #1 and was the female lead of most early Captain America comics. Betsy was a member of Project Rebirth, the program that created the super-soldier serum and transformed Steve Rogers into Captain America.

Golden Girl was not only an ally to Steve Rogers, but also to Jeffrey Mace, another man who took up the Captain America mantle. She has since retired and lives in a retirement home for former superheroes.

6 Millie The Model

Millie the Model

Millie Collins, also called Millie the Model, is another important Golden Age heroine who is not a costumed crimefighter. Millie is a supermodel, businesswoman, and actress. She is the CEO of Millie's Models and has done business with She-Hulk and Dazzler.

Millie is one of Marvel's first female characters and one of the first women of Marvel to receive a solo series. Mille's solo series Millie the Model ran for two hundred and seven issues, making it the longest-running Marvel series with a female lead.

5 Claire Voyant

While Natasha Romanoff may be the most popular character to use the title of Black Widow, she was not the first. Claire Voyant's first appearance was in Mystic Comics Vol. 1 #4. She has a very different backstory than the modern Black Widows in the Marvel Universe.

Claire is a demon who has the power to generate fire, travel to other dimensions, vampirism, and heal beings. She has no connection to the Red Room Academy. Claire was brought to the present day and was apart of the organization known as The Twelve.

4 Venus

Venus

Venus, whose real name is Aphrodite Ourania, is an Olympian and the goddess of love. When she decided to live as a human, she moved to New York. Her beauty quickly granted her many opportunities, and she became the editor of Beauty Magazine. Aphrodite Ourania is not to be confused with the siren that goes by Venus.

These two have met, and Aphrodite did not like that the siren was impersonating her. Aphrodite's powers include superhuman durability, superhuman speed, teleportation, enchantment, and energy manipulation.

3 Miss America

Miss America

Madeline Joyce, the original Miss America, is one of Marvel's first superheroes. She debuted in Marvel Mystery Comics Vol. 1 #49. She then went on the have her own magazine, titled Miss America Magazine.

Miss America was apart of the Invaders, All-Winners Squad, and the Liberty Legion, all teams that were active during World War II. Some of her teammates were Captain America, Bucky Barnes, Spitfire, Jim Hammond, and Namor. For a time, she and her husband the Whizzer were Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver's parents. This was later retconned.

2 Namora

Namora is the cousin of Namor, another one of Marvel's iconic Golden Age heroes. Namora is an Atlantean/mutant hybrid, who has been doing heroics for decades. Namora also has a daughter named Namorita, who is a member of the New Warriors.

Namora is a founding member of the Agents of Atlas, a lineup that included the siren named Venus, Gorilla-Man, Jimmy Woo, M-11, and Uranian. She also led an Atlantean Rebellion during the Secret Empire event.

1 Hellcat

Hellcat

Before Patsy Walker became the fearsome costumed fighter known as Hellcat, she was the star of several golden age comics. These comics were Miss America Magazine, Patsy Walker, Patsy and Hedy, Patsy and her Pals. and Teen Comics.

When Patsy was brought into the modern Marvel timeline, these comics became stories her mother wrote about her and sold. Patsy Walker became Hellcat in Avengers Vol. 1 #144. She has since joined the Defenders and the Lady Liberators.  Patsy also has a very close friendship and partnership with She-Hulk.
